He’s never cared how I show up. Just that I show up.
I tap out another message and hit send.
I need your help
Before I even have a chance to try to take it back, three dots appear immediately.
Levi
Everything ok?
I pull in a deep breath and tap out my response.
Yeah
Can you help me with the report on the hollow heart field?
I watch and wait while my heart nearly thumps out of my chest because the dots don’t appear.
But then they do.
Of course. When?
My gaze shifts to the report next to me, spread out on the table in a jumbled mess.
Tonight?
My thumbs hover for a moment as my entire body feels like it’s vibrating.
You can come to the cabin
Levi’s text appears almost instantly.
I can be there in 10
I nod to myself, pulling in a deep breath as I lower my feet from the railing and sit up, and my leg starts bouncing.
But this isn’t my body wanting to run away. This feels different.
Iwanthim to come here.
See you soon
I release a long breath as I set my phone on the table again and bring my focus back to the drawing in my lap.
A smile spreads over my lips as I stare into Levi’s eyes, and I realize what this feeling is.
I’m excited to see him.
THIRTY-THREE
Winston runs aheadinto the trees as we near Silas’s cabin, and I roll my shoulders back, shaking out my hands as I tell myself to just be cool.
But I’m not being cool at all. I’m excited, nervous, and full of anticipation. Silas reached out to me, asked for my help, and I get to spend time with him. I’m far from maintaining any type of composure right now.
As I round the bend of the driveway and the cabin comes into view, I let out a chuckle as some of the tension drains from my body.
Winston sits proudly next to Silas on the covered porch like he owns it, his tongue hanging out in a wide, happy grin as he leans into Silas’s scratch.
