He started to thrust harder and faster now, his fingers digging into her soft flesh as he drew them both closer to the pinnacle. Soon, she screamed his name, her entire body shaking with her release.
It only took a few more thrusts and he was coming. He held himself deep inside of her as his entire world exploded around him. White-hot pleasure hit him hard and swept over him.
Long moments later, she sighed in complete and absolute satisfaction. Her entire body relaxed beneath him. He opened his eyes and leaned down to kiss the back of her neck. She shivered in response, and while his body liked that reaction, Ian knew she needed a break.
He pulled out of her, and she murmured grumpily. His mouth twitched. After throwing away the condom, he looked at himself in the mirror. He should feel guilty for taking her the way he did, but he didn’t. In fact, he felt more centered than he had in years. After wandering back into the bedroom, he knew he should go out and talk things over with Conner and Luc, but he knew where he needed to be.
Trying his best not to jostle her awake, and failing, he smiled at her grumpiness.
“What?”
“Come on, love. Get under the covers.”
For once she didn’t fight him. Instead, she settled against the pillow, and he joined her. Easily, as if she had been doing it most of her life, she rolled over and into his arms. The moment she put her head on his shoulder, he felt his world settle.
He stared up at the ceiling and tried to make sense about all these insane thoughts. Even if both of them made it out of this fucked up situation alive, he knew that would most likely end everything between them. She would probably walk out of his life at that point. Besides, he wasn’t a man who was built for forever.
But damned if Lila didn’t want to make him try for it. With every fiber of his soul, he wanted to hold onto her forever, keeping her safe and making sure that no one even looked at her the wrong way. Was it because of the situation, or was it because of the woman? He wasn’t sure he could answer that thought, not with her head on his shoulder and her hand over his heart.
Because if he were pressed for an answer right now, he would definitely say he wanted a forever that included nights like this.

The man known as Viktor Romanov looked out over the dark and quiet beach. Irritation slinked down his spine, as he tried to figure out just where that bitch was. For years, he had thought he was safe, then she had shown up at the CIA digging into her mother’s past. When he had gotten her burned, he had thought he was safe. Without her friends at the CIA, she should have been taken out by any of her enemies.
He had been wrong.
Just like he had been wrong that morning. When she had been late…that had been a mistake that just didn’t usually happen to him. Truthfully, he had thought she had been too broken to investigate her family’s unfortunate situation. She was worse than her mother in so many ways.
His phone buzzed at his hip. He didn’t feel like talking to anyone, but he knew there were matters he had to deal with.
He clicked on his phone.
“Report.”
There was a pause. Oh, now we were going to get pissy? He paid this asshole a small fortune to take care of the matter and he kept fucking up.
“She’s nowhere on the island. I know that they all flew back, and since she had no one else to help her on Kauai, there’s a good chance Smith was her only lifeline.”
“Apparently not. He was reported to be at Dillon security with that Davis woman.”
He hadn’t wanted to know about these people. He didn’t want to deal with this, but that bitch’s daughter wasn’t letting it go. Even if he disappeared, she would find him. And there was one thing he knew about the granddaughter of the late, great Judith Eddington. She would never let this go. Not now. Not ever.
“I want you to check all forms of escape off of Kauai. Did you have someone watching the ports?”
“No.”
“Send someone. She could have easily disappeared off the island that way while Ian left by private plane.”
“Why the bloody hell would she do that?”
Yep, he was going to kill the dumbass when he was done with this. “They were both spies, so there’s a chance they are playing us. Making us look at the bright and shiny Ian Smith, while she slunk away.”
In fact, that sounded more like Lila. She would want to go her own way, and from all the reports, Smith didn’t even like the woman. Granted, an Eddington woman tended to trap so many men, but they definitely had an antagonistic relationship.
And maybe he had followed the woman back to Oahu.
“Where is Smith now?”
