She lifts her shoulder in a half-shrug. “Only if it’s a nice one.”

My lips part, but no words come out.

What can I even say to that?

The corners of her eyes crinkle, as those eyes turn even darker. Watching. Assessing.

“Cat got your tongue, cowboy?”

I press my lips into a tight line. I’m not sure what game she’s playing, but I won’t be playing it with her.

She must see it on my face, which makes her even more amused for some reason.

“Oh, don’t tell me I scandalized you.”

She lets out another small chuckle. The sound is low and husky and goes straight to my dick.

From the corner of my eye, I can see her twirl that finger over the rim of her empty glass.

“You know what? I retract my statement.” She shakes her head slightly. “I think you just might be that oblivious.”

“I’m not,” the words are out before I can stop them, and immediately I know it’s the wrong thing to say. Not only do I sound like a six-year-old, but she also knows it too, and finds it hilarious, however, there is no going back now.

“Mhmmm…” she hums softly, not even trying to hide her smile. “If you say so.”

“I do.”

I expect her to continue fighting me on it, but she just turns her focus to the bar.

I should be glad, but for some reason, the whole thing annoys me even more. I’m about to open my mouth, to say what, I have no idea, but Lara comes back.

“I swear that man can talk one’s ear off!” she clicks her tongue. “Like seriously, ain’t nobody gotta time for that.” Lara shakes her head. “Y’all good? Need a refill?”

“No, I’m fine. But thanks.”

That damn chuckle is back, making my fingers tighten around my glass.

What the hell is her problem?

“Okay, if you change your mind let me know.” Her gaze darts to the watch on her wrist. “For the next twenty minutes at least. Then I’m off the hook for tonight.”

She watches me intently with her dark eyes, almost like she’s waiting for an answer? Clearing my throat, I nod. “That’s good. I’ll be done after this one as well.”

I lift my drink to my mouth and take a long sip. The faster I finish this, the faster I can get out of here. Away fromher.

Besides, it’s getting late. If I want to get another hour or two of work before bed, I need to get out on the road soon.

“Well…” Lara leans against the counter, her tone lowering as she places her warm hand over mine. “Considering we’re both leaving, maybe we should get out of here together once I’m done.” She winks at me. “I’d appreciate aride.”

A ride? What the?—

The sip of the whiskey I just took gets stuck in my throat as the realization sinks in, making me choke. I fight the need to spit out the drink, my eyes watering and vision turning blurry.

Did she just proposition me?

Because it damn sure seemed like it.

I cough, my Adam’s apple bobbing as I try to swallow so I can finally breathe.
