‘He’ll be thrilled,’ Lucy said. ‘And the sooner you tell him, the happier you’ll both be.’

‘And,’ I added, remembering the reason for this evening, ‘on that note, shouldn’t we get on with making some decisions about your wedding day, Adele?’ I’ll make us some more tea and we can get to work.’

‘You’re right,’ said Lucy. ‘I’ll need to design a wedding gown that can accommodate your changing shape, or be easily altered to take that into account. I’ve brought some brochures and magazines with me to get an idea of the style you like.’

‘The first thing we need to do is write a guest list,’ said Noelle, ‘so that the invitations can be bought and sent out.’

I headed towards the kitchen but Adele reached out to me as I walked past her chair, and I assumed she was going to say something mushy about how I’d helped.

‘Erin,’ she said, looking all teary-eyed again. ‘May I have a biscuit, please?’

I couldn’t help myself. I roared with laughter.
