“Tell him I’d fuck myself with a pineapple before I fucked him,” Daphne fired back. “So, that doesn’t sting.”

“A pineapple would, though,” Blair commented while crouching to tie her sneakers.

Daphne bit into her cheek, lifting a finger at Blair. “’Tis true.”

I whistled, signaling for Blair to get her ass out the door.

Blair gave Daphne one last anxious look before moving past me and into the hallway. Neither of us spoke as we left Poenas Dare Hall.

It was after curfew, so the hall was mostly deserted.

As we went down the stairs, I took two steps at a time, and she lagged. When we reached the main floor, her pace slowed further.

She trailed me like a naive little doe wandering into traffic.

What she didn’t know was that I’d already started my engine, ready to plow right through her.

A few lingering classmates paused and stared at us. Unless it was Seraphina, I didn’t make a habit of being seen with women.

Not many here knew the Night Sons existed. Blair only did because Jett had been too stupid to keep his mouth shut. Realistically, she should’ve been thanking me. I was about to save her life.

Jett telling her about us had been a death sentence for them both.

After her behavior and threats, my choosing her as a Fawn was risky.

Not as risky as Nico’s Selection, but still not as logical as I’d planned.

For some reason, after I’d seen her, my gut stopped caring about logic. I wanted her to be mine.

My fists tightened as I walked, forcing down the urge to grab her by the hair and haul her forward.

To keep myself in check, I slid a hand into my pocket and brushed my thumb over the ribbon I’d taken from her hair in class.

I was still undecided on how I’d punish her for disobedience.

She was lucky I’d shown restraint in class. I was capable of far worse than ripping up her notes and planting her on my lap.

My restraint wasn’t out of mercy. I believed in no such thing.

I just needed her to cooperate tonight.

When we reached the main entrance, she stopped and took two steps backward.

“Unlike you, I’m not allowed off campus after curfew.” She shook her head and threw her hands through the air.

I grabbed her wrist, opened the door, and shoved her through it. “Looks like you’ve broken it now.”

Blair

The doors slammed shutbehind us, and I flinched so hard that I felt it in my jaw.

Staring ahead, all I saw was the unwelcoming darkness, punctuated by the low lights surrounding the university’s grand fountain. The stone steps looked steeper than they had when I climbed them days ago.

My gaze tracked the long drive stretching toward the steel gates.

The only way in.
