“I’m waiting.” Cedric tapped his fingers against the desk.
Professor Nelson’s mouth snapped shut.
“Exactly.” Cedric slid off the desk, smashing his foot against the professor’s glasses on the floor. “Come on, Blair.”
I held my bag against my stomach as I scurried behind him, leaving the lecture hall. Cedric was already on his phone, texting, as we walked around the corner.
I was almost positive Professor Nelson would fail me in his class now. Even though I had a nearly perfect grade. I was used to shady professors who took it out on my grades when they didn’t like me denying them.
“Stay here,” Cedric told me. He held his phone to his ear and said, “Nelson was being a fucking asshole to her. Can someone please give me the go-ahead to skin that ugly motherfucker so I don’t have to keep attending his classes?” He chuckled. “Yeah, got it.”
He ended the call, and I wasn’t sure what to do. So I started tiptoeing away.
“Don’t move,” he said to get me to freeze.
I stood there awkwardly as he typed on his phone.
Checking my watch, I muttered, “I, uh … have my next class to get to.”
“No, you don’t,” he replied, as if knowing that for a fact.
“Who do I need to kill for hurting my Fawn?”
I turned around to find Enzo only inches away from me.
He jerked his head toward Cedric. “Thanks, man.”
Cedric nodded back and walked away.
“Let’s go.” Enzo made afollow-memotion.
I stood there, staring, as warmth spread through my blood. I hadn’t seen him in so long that my body somehow ached to get closer to him.
Like he was the devil that could rid the demons that had come back to haunt me.
Someone shoved into my body, pushing me forward, and knocked sense into me.
“Watch where the fuck you’re going,” Enzo warned them.
The guy’s eyes widened when he noticed Enzo, and he took off running.
I stood planted in place, shaking my head. “I have English.”
He shook his head. “English can wait. You speak it plenty fine. You know your ABCs.”
I crossed my arms, glaring at him.
“Come on, Blair.” He clicked his tongue. “Don’t make me ask again.” He turned around and started walking, as if knowing that I wasn’t stupid enough not to follow him.
As we walked up the steps, I made sure to stomp up them as loudly as possible. Deep down, there was relief that he’d rescued me. I didn’t want to risk falling asleep in class again and suffering through another nightmare.
I planned to go to Dr. Everette and ask her for sleeping pills. She seemed to like fellow Fawns. Maybe she’d do that for me.
Enzo walked us to the gate that led to his dorm hall and unlocked it. When we were through, he locked it back, and I followed him into his room.
The air was thick with the smell of his cologne, and I inhaled it deep into my nostrils. It’d suddenly become one of my favorite smells. I glanced around, scanning the room for a bottle of it.
Maybe I’ll just steal it on my way out of here.
