I’m going to have to go over everything that he has just told me later, but I need to file it away for the moment. I can’t deal with it now, I need to deal with it at House, surrounded by my safety and my men, where I can deal with it slowly. It’s pretty straightforward, to be honest. The only real unknowns are the Gods, actually.

I glance up at Pete to find him still watching me, “Why were the Gods interested in whether I lived? I mean, I was just a baby, granted one that would inherit a kingdom, with two very powerful parents, but that still seems below the Gods, so why did it matter so much that I was alive?”

Pete’s eyes glow with pride, “Well caught. Unfortunately, we don’t know. It didn’t make any sense to us either. They warned us, which is something that the Gods don’t do, they see all of us as beneath them.”

“Again, awesome,” I mutter sarcastically. “Next question, are you both my parents, no adoption, one of you is the other one isn’t, no, you found me in a hole in a tree?”

“Such a weird way to phrase that question, Nene,” Van says with amusement.

Pete shakes his head, “Nope. You are one hundred percent mine and your mother's, who, for clarity purposes, because I feel like it’s important to you, is the Queen of Trieneliea and an angel.”

I nod, “Thank you.”

Well, that raises more questions, but not questions that I want to ask Pete, not yet, at least. It’s not that I don’t trust him, but I also don’t trust him completely either.

“We should have asked you this first, but we all got sidetracked for obvious reasons. Are you with Murray?” Raiden asks.

Oh, shit, yeah, I forgot that was one of the main reasons that we needed to find him.

“Actually, yes, she arrived a couple of days ago, she’s just gone into town to get some more supplies, why?”

“Fuck,” Griff mutters. He then quickly explains to Pete what’s going on with Murray, and as he speaks, Pete’s expression gets darker.

“Are you sure?” He asks.

I nod, “Yeah, we are. Merrikh has no reason to lie and had no idea that we knew her.”

Chapter Twenty-Nine

Neith

“Fuck. Okay, I was surprised that she had managed to find me, but since she’s an old friend, I hadn’t questioned it,” Pete explains.

“We think that she may be under the control of Casimir, so you need to be really careful around her,” I add with a worried frown.

Pete nods, “Understood. You don’t know if she knows that you were the ones to free him?”

“No, we don’t,” Ransom replies this time.

“Well, in that case, it’s probably not a good idea for you to hang around here just in case,” he says. “Don’t get me wrong, I would love to catch up properly, and spend some real time with you, Neith, with all of you, but I will not put your lives at risk to do so, and if Murray is being controlled by Casimir then we don’t want him to put two and two together, even if it is unlikely that he knows that you exist.”

“Wait, does Murray not know? I thought that she did?” I ask.

I could have sworn that Sully said that she knew, but maybe I’m remembering that wrong, or maybe Sully has the wrong information.

Pete shakes his head, “No, fortunately not. One day, we will be able to spend proper time together, and I can tell you all about your mom.”

“I would really like that,” I reply, swallowing thickly as emotion clogs my throat.

Pete smiles, and then his eyes move to my left, where Baz has been standing silently observing us.

“I know you,” he surprises us all by saying.

“You do?” Baz asks, the tension heavy in his voice.

Pete frowns, “I think so, but I’m not sure. It’s like this isn’t you.”

“What?” I ask because he’s not making much sense at all.
