“Well, I’m not entirely sure that it will work, but it’s the only shot we’ve got. Doc can’t take us because there are too many of us to take at once, and we don’t know what we’re walking into, so going one at a time would be a really bad idea,” Ransom explains quickly.

“Got it,” Reed replies.

We all watch as Ransom calls on his magic and starts the spell to bring House’s portal to us. I’m really glad that cave hasn’t taken offense to magic being used in here, and I hope that it stays that way.

Nervous energy thrums through me, but at least I’m going to get to ask Pete the questions that I need to ask him sooner rather than later. Ironically, I kind of wish I had a bit more time to digest it before I had to speak to him about it, but oh well.

I summon Betty and Asael. He disappeared almost as soon as Griff pricked his finger, and the ancient magic came out to play.

I can’t say that I blame him.

Securing Asael on my back and holding Betty tightly. She hums in greeting, and I instantly relax.

Whatever is about to happen, I’ve got this.

We’ve got this.

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Neith

“Alright, everyone, head through at the same time,” Ransom orders as the portal pops up in front of him. “It will take us to the location that Kar sent.”

We waste no time in doing what he has said because, quite frankly, we don’t have the time to waste. We have no idea if Pete is going to decide to disappear again, and if he does, any hope of finding him again, getting the answers that we need from him, and warning him, goes with him. There is, of course, the added complication of Murray and whether or not she is with him, and if she is, whether she knows that we know that she trapped Merrikh and is in cahoots with the big bads. We also don’t know if she is an actual threat to Pete or not.

Fun.

It actually is fun, I love this kind of thing.

The portal doesn’t disorient me as much as every other portal I've been through, and I briefly wonder if it’s because this one is technically mine before I force myself to focus as I step out of the other side.

Betty is ready in my hands, and I look around. We appear to be in the woods, and from what I can tell, there is nothing around us at all. It’s just trees.

“Did it take us to the wrong place?” I ask quietly.

Ransom shakes his head, but before he can reply, a figure steps out of a shimmer by a tree.

Weird.

“Neith, what are you doing here?” Pete asks me, and then realization dawns across his features, and he adds, “You’ve been the ones following me.”

“Hey Pete, or should I say, dad?” I ask and realize that it may have come out a little bit sassier than I had intended it to.

He smirks, “You know then. Well, obviously you do.”

“I know you,” Doc exclaims suddenly.

“What?” I ask him.

Doc nods, “Yeah, do you remember I said that I thought I was forgetting something, but it gave me a headache trying to remember what it was?”

Reed nods, “Yeah.”

I only vaguely remember that, but thankfully, I’m not the only one who looks confused.

“When Neith tripped on that tree root and flew into the barrier,” Doc starts.

“I was pushed,” I interrupt automatically.
