In addition to the security setup there were several pieces of modernsculpture and a few trees in large planters. The place appeared pretty high-end. Apparently there was good money in building a better banana, or whatever they did here.

They stopped near the revolving doors and Taylor asked, “Okay, what is the plan?”

Brodie replied, “We’ll play it by ear.”

“At least hum the tune.”

Brodie said, “We ID ourselves and ask—or demand—to see Charles Granger on a matter of official business and extreme urgency.”

Kim said, “Let’s say that works. Now we’re in Charles Granger’s office. What do we want to say to him?”

“You’re under arrest, asshole, on suspicion of espionage, treason, murder, and impersonating a pagan god.”

FBI Agent David Kim said, “Not sure about the last. Also, not sure I have arrest powers. I can call the Bundes—”

“We take him. And drag his ass to the embassy. I want him to face American justice.”

“Okay, but—”

Brodie assured him, “If you do the wrong thing for the right reasons, and do it with enough speed and confidence, you can usually get away with it for just long enough to make it work.”

Kim had no reply, but Taylor said to him, “When you work with Scott, you learn a lot.”

FBI Special Agent Kim looked at them both as though he realized he’d fallen in with a bad crowd and wanted out.

Taylor continued, “If Ulrich remains on standby, from here we can be inside the embassy in less than fifteen minutes.”

Brodie added, “If Granger isn’t here, or they claim he isn’t, we ask for Reinhard Dorn.”

Kim said, “I doubt if Herr Dorn will see us, but if he does, what are we going to say to him?”

Brodie replied, “Depends on what he says to us.” He added, “Reinhard Dorn is a person of interest.”

Kim nodded. “Okay… but he’s a German citizen, and we can’t arrest him.”

Brodie agreed, “We can’t. But we can abduct him.”

“I hope you’re joking.”

“Of course.”

Kim turned to Taylor. “Your partner’s brain-damaged, but there’s still hope for you. Why are you doing this?”

She looked back at him stone-faced. “Because we’ve been deceived. Because good people are dead who have not been avenged. Because there is something very bad on the horizon, and we can’t quite see it, and if we go a little farther out maybe we will.”

Kim thought about that, then nodded. “You guys are out of your goddamn minds, but you commit.”

Brodie asked, “Ready?”

Taylor and Kim nodded, and they pushed through the revolving doors of Titan Genetics.

CHAPTER 48

Brodie, Taylor, and Kim entered the lobby and walked toward the reception desk, where three individuals in dark-blue uniforms sat near phones, computers, and security monitors.

Brodie approached the youngest-looking security guard, an overweight man in his mid-twenties whose nametag identified him as “Vogel,” and flashed his badge. Taylor and Kim did the same.

Brodie said, “I am Chief Warrant Officer Scott Brodie of the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division, here with Chief Warrant Officer Magnolia Taylor and Special Agent David Kim of the FBI. We are investigating the homicide of U.S. Army CID Special Agent Harry Vance, and we are here to see a member of the Titan Genetics Board of Directors, Charles Granger.”
