For a moment, hope flickered in my chest as he weakly tried to swallow, my blood trickling into his mouth. But then his body convulsed violently, his back arching off the ground. A horrible gurgling sound escaped his throat as he began to choke, my blood mixed with his own spilling from his lips in dark rivulets.

“No, no, no,” I whispered, pulling my wrist back. The smell of something wrong—something burning and acrid—filled the air.His skin was turning an unnatural gray, veins darkening beneath the surface like poison spreading through his system.

Nyx’s eyes went vacant, the light fading from them, and his body seized one final time before going completely still.

Fuck.

Gunnar landed a few feet away from me, his smile cold and satisfied. “He’s dead, enforcer. I hurt him, but you killed him. He’s dead because of you.”

Rage flooded through me, burning away the guilt. I slowly stood, every muscle coiled for violence. “You’re going to pay for that.”

“Come and make me pay, enforcer. Let’s see what you’ve got left.”
