Chuckling, I shake my head. “Not really, no.”
“Home game again next week, right?”
I nod. “Wednesday.”
“I’m around Wednesday.”
“And this is… It’s still…”
“A secret? I got you. I’m very good at keeping secrets.”
I don’t know why, but I believe him. Wraith leans in and kisses me softly. Almost sweetly. Much too intimate for what we just did, but I don’t hate it.
“Good luck,” he says before slipping out of my car and walking away like nothing happened.
I lean my head back against the seat to take in this moment. That was so fucking hot, and then he just bailed like the perfect hookup.
Staring down at his card, I end up laughing. A quick piece ofass after each home game sounds like a damn good way to finish off the season.
After I move to the front seat and start the car, I press the Bluetooth to dial Boone. This time he answers quickly.
“Where are you?” he asks.
“Uh, just leaving Chirps. Where are you?”
“Home.”
“You said you were coming tonight.”
“I did. I was there. I saw the game.”
“Why weren’t you in your seat?”
“I don’t know, man. I was feeling agitated tonight so I walked around a lot. Sometimes sitting for too long is hard for me.”
“Yeah, I know.” It’s always been like that for him. “So you were there?”
“Yep. That goal Landham made in the third was fucking badass. He’s so fast on his skates.”
“He is.”
“No fights for you tonight?”
“Nah, Tampa’s pretty chill most of the time, but we’re battling Colorado tomorrow so you might see some action if you watch.”
“Of course I’ll watch.”
“Do you need company or do you want to come over?”
“Nah, I’m good. Plus, you travel tomorrow. You don’t need me messing up your routine.”
“You know I don’t mind when you want to hang out. I’ll make time.”
“I know, Pax, but it’s late and I’m tired. I’ll talk to you when you get back.”
“Sounds good.”
I end the call, feeling slightly better that Boone was at the game. He sounded pretty good too. I got to bust a nut and win a game, and my family is safe.
Pretty good night.
