“That’s another wisecrack of yours I’m going to overlook, Colcord.”

Colcord went on, “Ever since we held that thing, I’ve been wondering if we got the same, ah,revelation.”

Cash shook her head. “A lot of it was just so… utterly strange and incomprehensible.”

“But the gist of it? Theplan?”

“I got that, all right—­clear as day,” she said.

“Me too.”

“No wonder the church felt threatened.… I mean, holy crap!”

“Did we do the right thing?” Colcord asked.

“Hell yes,” said Cash.

They fell into a pensive silence. Then Colcord roused himself. “Well, Cash, we got a lot of work to do. We better get to it. And…” He hesitated. “Let’s never talk about this again. We’re going to let the world go on believing what they believe. Agreed?”

“Agreed.”
