He smiled at his friend’s opening question. Not that he blamed him.
While Jinx ran with a small handful of League assassin rebels, Savage was their leader and they rarely contacted him unless it was an emergency.
“Always.”
Savage snorted. “Who do I have to kill?”
“That remains to be seen. But right now, I have a slight problem. Eve’s sister took a contract for retrieval and once she was signed on, it was switched to a kill warrant.”
“Yeah . . . and?”
“She found the person that our system says took it out, but there’s no way to rescind it and she claims she didn’t take it out.”
Savage didn’t respond.
“Did you hear me?”
“I heard. Just ruminating over an impossibility. What do you mean, it can’t be rescinded?”
“I’m sending it to you now. As you can see, someone tapped our system and removed the ability to cancel the warrant.”
Savage took a moment before he spoke again. “What fucked up shit is this?”
“I was hoping you’d have some idea. Ever seen anything like it before?”
“No. There’s always a cancel code.”
But not this time. “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”
Savage sent the warrant back to him. “That it’s one of our assassins or high commanders? Yeah.”
“It would have to be, right?”
“Yes, it would. I don’t care how good a techspert is, if they went near our system, Quiakides would have them gutted within an hour.”
Yeah, their prime commander didn’t play. He was a nasty bastard, which was why his son, Nykyrian, was counted among their small group of rebels. Nyk had one rule– if anyone other than him killed his father, their prime commander, he’d gut them.
Apparently, there were some serious childhood issues stemming from the Quiakides’ home.
And that made him miss his own family. The only issue Jinx had was with his was his uncle who’d slaughtered his parents and sold him to the League.
If it was the last thing he did, he was going to kill that sick sonofabitch.
But that would have to wait. Right now, he had to take care of Jayne.
Savage spoke again, breaking him out of his moping. “Whoever did this was sewing massive strife between Scalera and Pride.”
“Yeah, I had the same thought. But who in the League would give a shit about either one?”
“You’ll have to interview them. Find out who has a connection.”
Jinx sighed. “I’m the only one I know who has a connection.”
“Excuse me?”
“I’m related to the Scaleras through my maternal grandmother. She was the only sister to Nero’s father.”
“Are you fucking kidding me?”
