Madlyn’s gaze stayed glued to the couple on the dance floor.“I’ll take a one-night stand with that man.”
They both ignored Madlyn.
Devon slid a hand up to grasp the back of Tessa’s neck.
“What makes you think anything else will happen between them?He just asked her to dance.”
“You didn’t see how he looked at her, Devon. It was intense, weird, and a bit scary, like she was already his.”
Devon rubbed his hand up and down Tessa’s back while his head turned toward the dance floor.
His eyes widened immediately.Damn.Tessa was right.Grant held Jennifer very close, and his head was bent to Jennifer’s as he listened to something she was saying. There was an intimacy that surrounded them like they’d been together for years instead of just having met a few minutes ago.Devon frowned and grew a little concerned.Ever since growing up in the same small town, he’d never seen Grant look at a woman like that, and they’d known each other for over twenty years. But then his gaze slid to Jen.She seemed very relaxed and showed no fear or discomfort. They together as a couple might not be such a bad thing, Devon thought.
“We have to stay out of it, Tessa.Look.”Devon released Tessa enough to turn her toward the dance floor.“Look at them.Somehow, they look like they belong together. They fit.And think, if something does come from this, maybe she’ll mellow him out, and he’ll bring some life into Jennifer’s life.Something you’ve been trying to do forever. That’s why she’s at the club with us tonight, right?I don’t know how you did it, but you somehow pulled her out of that shelter of hers.”
Tessa nodded and gritted her teeth.“I wanted her to have some fun, but Grant was the last person I’d want around her.”
Devon watched his wife stare at the couple on the dance floor.“He just better not hurt her unless he likes his balls cut off, tied in a knot, and shoved down his throat.”
Devon grimaced and burst out laughing.“Ouch.Jesus, woman.I didn’t know you could be so bloodthirsty.”He nuzzled his lips against her ear.“I think I like it, as long as I’m not the victim.”His voice was a soft purr.“Let’s go dance. It’s a slow song so I can hold you close.”
Tessa stayed focused on Jennifer as she was led to the same dance floor.

Madlyn
Madlyn stayed at their table and narrowed her eyes. Her gaze stayed glued to Grant and Jennifer.“If Jennifer hadn’t been here, he would have asked me to dance,” she hissed to herself.“Why the hell did he pick white trash over me?I’m the prettiest and most sophisticated by far between the two of us.”Her dislike for that woman rose to pure hatred at that moment, and that wasn’t a good thing because she resented everyone already.Add the extreme emotions, which made the way she felt for anyone, especially Jennifer, worse.
Chapter Four
Grant nodded at Devonwhen he and his wife, Tessa, came through the outside door.He and his longtime friend were both involved with a special group of men called the Good Knight Society.Grant had been a part of it for years before he recruited Devon to join. The group had a hundred men, and their main objective was to protect innocent people, like women and children.
The group was incredibly secretive, and each man knew they could never tell a soul, not even their wives, about them.If they did, they would disappear. They needed anonymity to do the work that sometimes crossed the line between following the law and what was prohibited by the legal system.
That night, he was talking business and didn’t immediately go over to them. These get-togethers were mostly about business, which was the only reason he came. But a lot of one-night stands happened, and even a few affairs started. That was only one reason he tended to avoid people, especially large crowds like that night in the club.He disliked it when women threw themselves at him.
