“Really?” Edward tilted his head back and forth, studying Brandon like a complex piece of artwork.
Elinor tugged on his arm as a laugh bubbled out of her. “No more admiration of anyone’s anything tonight.”
“Are you admitting to something?” Edward asked, turning to her and lifting his eyebrows suggestively.
“You wish.”
Before she could move to take her turn, Edward stopped her with a light hand on her arm. His eyes had turned serious.
“Lucy called you, didn’t she?”
Dang it. He’d been waiting for her guard to come down, and she’d let it. “Why do you say that?”
Edward stared her down, peeling away her bad attempt at a poker face. “What did Lucy tell you?”
“You need to talk to her first.”
“Why?”
“Because she told me in confidence.”
Edward let out a frustrated sigh. “I can’t help you if I don’t know what’s wrong.”
“Please just talk to her first.”
“I will. For you.”
Meeting his eyes again was a mistake. He had his heart in them, and it only made her feel worse, like she was this evil temptress who had somehow lured him into falling for her. For someone who always followed the rules and tried to be responsible, it was an unsettling feeling.
