Jody bit her lip. “This is the first time I’ve seen this house of yours since you moved back in. Derek said you’ve updated the kitchen?”
“Some of it.” He led the way while they trailed him. There were some things he hadn’t had the time or money to update yet, like the tile countertops from the eighties, but the fridge and oven were new, and he’d refinished the cupboards himself and adjusted them for maximum utility. It was a good space with room for everything he threw at it.
Jody eyed the avocados in a dish on his counter. He always had a few perfectly ripe ones if he could help it.
“Are you two hungry?”
Jody nodded, not able to hold back a smile. “I still remember that spinach salad you made us once with the cut-up avocado and the vinaigrette dressing you created. Do you have anything like that?”
Derek rolled his eyes. “I think it’s safe to say making me apologize was only half the reason she wanted to come over here. But if we’re throwing out requests, I’ve got some non-salad ones.”
“Sure thing.” It was nice to have a purpose. Luke threw himself into cooking and listening to the two of them talk about their upcoming wedding. It wasn’t until he was alone again and staring at his closed front door that he went back to feeling like nothing would ever be the same again with Tara out there somewhere hating him.
