Rebecca’s eyes cut to Jay. Hewassmirking. She smacked him in the chest, and he had the audacity to laugh.

“I’m sorry. I’m just really happy right now, so it’s gonna be hard for you to kill this day for me. Forgive me.”

Marlise’s face softened. “I’m glad you’re happy. But we still have a business to run. Is your happiness going to interfere with that?”

“Absolutely not. This will never happen again. But, um, we’re going to need two replacement phones and our cars are still at the hotel.”

Marlise rubbed her forehead. “I had to send Annette to fetch you, and I rescheduled your appointments for this afternoon, so you two can figure the rest out. Go home and shower. Tomorrow, I expect you here on time, working hard, and no drama. I can’t take any more drama today.”

A timid knock sounded at the door and Marlise sighed. “Come in.”

Felicity peeked her head in, looking worried. “I know this is probably not a good time to drop bad news, but Clarissa cleared out her desk about ten minutes ago and then handed me her work phone and tablet. And also this note.” She stepped into the room and handed Clarissa’s things to Marlise, who looked like she really did want to murder somebody as a form of stress relief.

Marlise wrestled the note open and read for a full minute, her face turning redder and redder. “Change of plans. Get Dorothy and Annette in here. You two can stay in your ridiculous wet clothes for the rest of the day. I don’t care. We have some accounts to divvy up.”

Jay ran to get the other two. Rebecca pulled up a chair, and Felicity grabbed another one from the corner and came to sit next to her.

“So,” Felicity said with a wink. “It looks like you two figured things out.”

Jay stepped back in. His eyes landed on Rebecca, and they glowed with warmth, and questions, and the anticipation of figuring out their mess.

Rebecca shrugged. “I guess we did.”
