“It was my mistake to fall for him.”
“I wanted to tell you.”
Her head jerked up. “Wanted to tell me what?”
Why had he said that? “Nothing. Just that he wasn’t good enough for you.”
She took a step closer. He could smell her apple blossom lotion, the same one she’d always rubbed into her arms when getting ready for a night out.
“Did you know he was cheating on me?”
“I suspected.”
He could tell she wanted to slap him, but they were practically strangers now. Instead, her little hands made fists at her side. “How could you not say anything?”
“Becca, you were so set on him.”
Her face flushed, and she bit her lip. “I’d already sent out the invitations. The final fitting for my dress was done. You came to wish me luck. Told me you couldn’t come to the wedding because of a family thing. Do you remember? You brought me a sweater I’d left at your apartment. You’re telling me if I hadn’t caught him a few days later, you would have let me go through with it?”
“Dorothy, is Rebecca in yet?” Marlise’s sing-song voice carried from the entry-way, and Jay pulled away from her accusing eyes. She was right. He should have told her. But instead, they hadn’t spoken again until she walked in today.
