Rebecca turned away, busying herself with gathering up chair sashes. “I always thought you were weird, Jay. I’m not sure I like you normal.”
He almost asked her to explain but thought better of it. Maybe he should be the one to explain. “I thought by paying you no attention that Clarissa would ignore you as well, but it’s only done the opposite. So, from now on, I’ll try to be friendlier.”
He expected the glare he got in return. “Looking forward to it.”
“You could be friendlier, too.” He let a small smile slip, knowing his hypocrisy would bother her.
She stared at him. “Do you remember that time in the college cafeteria, when some kid tripped on your foot sticking out and threatened to kill you?”
“I didn’t do it on purpose. I was all arms and legs back then. Still am, I guess.”
“And that’s what you told him. He ended up shaking your hand and walking off.”
“Is there a point to this story?” He gathered up the floral arrangements to put in the fridge.
Rebecca shook her head. “Never mind. I was just checking to see if that guy still exists, because sometimes I think I’m talking to robot Jay.”
“Um, you realize I’m your boss now, right?”
She stared him down. “Never forgotten it.”
