“Oh gosh, he loved it,” she said.

“Good. We’ve got a sale on hams today.”

But she couldn’t think about hams or any dinners that he wouldn’t be coming home to, for that matter. “Thank you, but I’m all set for tonight. I just really need to post this.” She held up the piece of paper.

He took it and read her listing. “Well, yeah, I see your urgency. Bal Week starts next week, but if you want the college kids to see your notice, you should really post it near the colleges up in L.A. or inland. Once the kids arrive here for Bal Week, they’ll already have their accommodations sorted out.”

“Oh,” Milly said, disappointed. “So I’m too late.”

“I’ll tell you what: My produce supplier is stopping by this afternoon. If you want to write out a few more of those listings, I can ask him topost them at the markets in Los Angeles. There are always some kids who make a plan to come down last-minute.”

“That would be helpful,” Milly said, thinking it would be ideal if she could commit to renting out the cottage before Lloyd returned on Friday. She wrote out two more notices and handed them to him. “Thank you very much.”

“Sure thing. I hope it works out.”

“Yes,” Milly said, a tinge of desperation in her voice. “I do too.”
