Their gazes held a moment, their faith creating another bond.

Kori had sensed Wyatt was a believer even before he’d said a prayer before they ate. She knew his family was. She’d seen signs on the walls at Refuge Cove with Scripture on them.

But knowing Wyatt was a believer—hearing him talk about it—thrilled her entirely more than it should. After her parents’ death, she’d turned to God. But all too often the experience felt so isolating. None of her colleagues or friends were believers. In fact, they usually mocked Christians and called faith a crutch.

The change in her life had been a good one—but also a hard, lonely one.

Kori was about to say something else when she saw the shift in Wyatt’s expression. He peered beyond her, his gaze darkening.

Something was wrong, wasn’t it?

Tension pulled across her back.

She should have known a relaxing dinner was too much to ask for.
