She went still, defiance filling her gaze. He understood it. He’d be the same way if that was one of his siblings. But they needed to keep level heads.

“Going after her right now will only get people hurt.” He kept his voice low. “Including Mackenzie.”

A beat passed. He felt the tension running through Kori. Then understanding passed through her gaze.

She exhaled slowly before saying, “Then what’s our plan?”

He watched as the man gripping Mackenzie guided her toward the barn door. He jerked it open, and the two of them disappeared inside.

He and Kori couldn’t wait here indefinitely. The storm was already moving in. And a group willing to wire buildings with explosives wasn’t going to extend much patience toward people they considered liabilities.

Collateral damage. That was how they’d see Herb and Billie. How they’d see Mackenzie and Pete.

How they’d see anyone who got in their way.

He was still working through his plan when the front door of the farmhouse opened.

A man, probably in his thirties, with an automatic rifle stepped onto the porch and paused.

He stood there a moment and scanned everything around him.

His gaze stopped on the woods, and he squinted.

Wyatt’s heart pounded faster. Had this man seen them?

He braced himself for whatever might happen next.

The man stepped off the porch . . . and headed directly toward them.
