“I’ll see who it is.” I rose.

Ruth grabbed Alice. “We’re going with you in case it’s a dangerous criminal.”

I opened the door and found Kency Blount, a smug smile smeared on her face, tapping her foot impatiently.

“Well good, I’ve got all three of you here,” she said snidely.

I made my voice sound as innocent as possible. “What are you talking about?”

“The three of you ladies are under arrest for assault with a deadly weapon.”

My jaw dropped. “What?”

Kenny nodded. “Just got a call from Birda Grice. She said one of y’all shot her in the butt after the other two told her to.”

“Oh,” Alice said. “That’s not true. I shot her butt; no one told me to do it.”

Kency smirked. “Like I said, the three of y’all are under arrest. I need you to come with me.”

TWENTY-ONE

Kency shuffled us off to the city jail, which was not a highlight of my life, if I had to admit it.

Before locking the cell on us, she promised that we’d see the judge in the morning.

Also not another highlight of my life.

But what could I do? Cry over spilt milk? No thanks. I gave Ruth and Alice the single cot even though we were the only folks in the whole jail.

A cell sat to the right of us and left, but Kency had placed us all together. I suppose for the comfort factor, even though there was no comfort in the fact that Birda had called the cops on an accident. And even though I had helped Kency in the past, she had no problem locking me up for the night.

“Sorry about this,” she said, “but until everything’s sorted out, it’s for the best.”

“So you say,” I replied.

I sank onto the floor while Alice and Ruth both sat on the cot. We’d been in the cell for maybe an hour when the jailer unlocked the door.

“You’re free to go. Looks like everything’s been sorted out.”

I stared at him in disbelief. “What are you talking about? What about the judge?”

He rolled his eyes as if to suggest that my question proved I was a newbie to this entire process. To which he would be right. I didn’t wander around getting myself arrested. I caught ghosts. Moved them to the other side. I wasn’t a lifetime prisoner.

“There won’t be a judge. It’s all worked out. We’ll wipe the arrest from your official records.”

I glanced back at Ruth and Alice.

“Well, what’re we doing standing around with our mouths hanging open to catch flies for? Let’s go.”

I hopped up and shot out of that cell faster than fast. I was about to walk out the door of the station when an annoyingly familiar voice rang out.

“Hold on, Blissful. We need to talk.”

I cringed. Every cell in my body groaned in annoyance. I slowly turned around and forced a smile to my face.

“Anita Tucker, what brings you all the way to Haunted Hollow?”

Her gaze dragged from me to Ruth and Alice. I took that to suggest they needed to leave.
