“Maybe he’s the one you’ve been looking for,” Emi suggested. “Go thank him for the drink.”
“Is that a good idea? The guy looks like a creep.” Spencer shot her a dirty look.
My stomach, alright tight with nerves, suddenly revolted completely. I stood back up, after just returning, and declared that I wanted to leave.
“See, I told you,” Spencer snarled. “the loser isn’t welcome. I’ll take you home Eisley.” Spencer stood with me and reached for his keys.
“What? No!” Soleil pouted. “Come on, don’t go. Look, let’s just invite him over. Maybe he’s not as scary as we think.”
“No!” I shouted. “No. I just want to go home.”
“I can take you.”
I spun around to face Constantine, who had snuck up behind me.
“Do you even know her?” Spencer glared.
“We go way back.” Constantine told the table and offered me his arm. “I’ll get you home safe.”
I felt like him and I had two definitions of the word. If safe to him was anything like our interaction in the bathroom, I was anything but. He put his arm around my waist possessively.
Therese cleared her throat. “Eisley, are you okay with this?”
I licked my lips. “Yeah, I’ll have Constantine take me home. You guys have fun.”
We turned and left before Spencer or anyone else could argue further about it. As much as I didn’t want to be alone with Constantine, I also didn’t want to stay and explain things to my friends.
“Let’s go home, wife.” Constantine whispered in my ear as we headed toward the door. As soon as we stepped out of the bar I pulled away from him.
“Will you stop calling me that?” I demanded.
“Why not? You’re still wearing your ring.”
My eyes flicked to his chest and he pulled out his necklace with a small gold band on it. He still had his too.
“I can hardly call you my husband. Husbands don’t up and leave for ten years without telling their wives.”
“I didn’t up and leave. If we’re being technical, it was you, that left.”
I opened and closed my mouth. I’d known him all of ten minutes and I was already pulling my hair out.
“That ceremony wasn’t legally binding.”
“If that’s what you think then why are you still wearing that necklace if you don’t want to be married to me?”
I looked around the parking lot. It was dark, but no one else was outside. The music from the bar was so loud it poured out, masking our argument to the patrons inside. Constantine reached for me and I jerked away.
“Don’t touch me.”
“Why not? I’m your husband, isn’t that something I’m allowed to do?”
I blinked. Pure blind rage filled me as I stared at him. Who was this man? He wasn’t the boy I’d left down in the basement of the Church. This man was demanding, snarky, and incredibly sexy. I hated how easily my body betrayed me in the bathroom and now. I was furious, but also insanely attracted to him. His touch had felt so good.
“My car is right there.” He pointed. “Let’s go.”
“I’m not going anywhere with you.” I crossed my arms.
Constantine stalked toward me. “Have you upheld your vows?”He repeated his question from before. The deep look in his blue eyes told me he was only interested in one part of it. Had I been faithful?
