Oh wait, that was me.

They shrunk away, looking ashamed and scared of me.

“It’s just a prank, man, we aren’t going to hurt anyone.”

“A prank is funny.” I stalked slowly toward them, pushing them into the other side of the corn. The knife in my boot burned hot against my leg. If Eisley wasn’t here, they’d be dead already. “This isn’t funny. Someone could get hurt.”

Another blood-curdling scream rang out somewhere deep in the field, diverting our attention behind us.

Jesus fucking Christ, could I get a break?

Flashlights began lighting up the sky and a moment later police were running down the path. “How many of you kids are in here?” One demanded of the teenagers who were this close to getting away.I snatched one by the shirt and dragged him back so he couldn’t run.

“Uh, officer it’s just a prank. Don't tell my mom.”

I dropped the kid and stepped back with Eisley. She put her arm around me and snuggled into my chest.

“How many of your friends are here today with those masks, kid?” The officer asked again.

“Seven,” he admitted, hanging his head. The officers muttered to themselves and reached for their radios.

“Come on, we’re taking you back to the entrance.”As the three teens were being dragged back toward the entrance, a couple passed them.I swore inwardly, and my mood fell, as I recognized the pair. They were Eisley’s pretend friends.Therese and Rem both perked up and came over to us.She ran to hug Eisley.

“Hey! I didn’t know you guys were here!”

Eisley didn’t hug her back. I could see it in her eyes. Kansas told her about her friend’s break-in.

“It was a spur-of-the-moment date night,” I said curtly, hoping she’d catch the hint.

“Ooh, same here. Let’s double.”

Eisley was standing silent, her face blank, as if unsure how to handle the situation. Did she take her on now, or wait until they were alone?

“Yeah, that could be fun. We’re doing the hayride after this. Join us.”Rem, who didn’t seem to have a clue as to what was happening, invited us.

“I’ve never done a double date.” Eisley said finally and reached for my hand. The four of us started walking again.I’d never dated at all. Sure, I’d taken women to bed. I said all the right things to get them there, but did I take one out to ensure my cock got wet? Never. Much like Eisley had waited for me, I was waiting for her.

“So, how did you two meet?” Therese leaned out and smiled at us. “I never heard the story.”

“Childhood sweethearts,” I replied coolly. “We even had this little ceremony when we were kids.” I raised the ring around my neck and showed her.Therese’s eyes lit up with the information.

“Oh! And your necklace?” She motioned to Eisley. “That’s adorable!” She laughed and looked up at her boyfriend. “My middle school boyfriend was Callum White. Can you imagine me being married to him?”

As we walked, Therese gave us the fourth degree, asking us all sorts of things I wasn’t interested in sharing. Most questions I simply had to lie about, but she didn’t seem to care, she just needed to hear her own voice.

All the while, Eisley hadn’t said a word.

“I’m so glad we found you guys in here,” Therese sighed in relief. “It’s been so crazy since you know, everything.”We popped out of the trail and got more cider and donuts, per Rem’s insistence.

“You’re so quiet, Eis. Are you okay?” Therese asked.

My eyes lit up as I waited for Eisley to respond. I wanted to see her lunge at the bitch. Scratch her face, rip her hair, kick her in the shin. I wanted her to be angry. She deserved to be angry.

But she didn’t.

“I’m fine. I’ve just had a long day. A long week, really.”

“Same, girl, same.” Therese looped her arms through hers and dragged her away. “Did you guys get your pumpkins yet? We did ours first, so we could put them in the car and not have to search for a good one in the dark.”
