I was impatient as all hell, but I tried to behave as she made me sit with her at the table while she showed me exactly where Scout was traveling. She was headed back into Ginata’s territory.

“Are you sure about this?”

“About what?” Ludovica turned to stare at me. I cringed.

“About Scout.” I let the words fall over us. We both knew what I had meant. How much of that was acting?

She could barely look at me, let alone let me touch her. Would she come back?

I couldn’t finish the thought, but my friend knew where I was going with it. She reached a hand out and placed it on my arm in an attempt at comfort.

“She’s gonna come back. Trust her.”

Shehadtrusted me, and look what happened.

“I’m just—confused,” I sighed and brushed my hand through my hair. “She kissed me. On the boat.” I revealed. I looked at Elvie to see her reaction.

Her eyebrows rose with surprise. “Oh? What exactly happened?” She scrunched up her nose and shook her head. “Let’s keep this PG. I don’t need bedroom details.”

I rolled my eyes. “There aren’t any. We were kind of worked up from a thing, and we kissed. She let me hold her until the boat got to the dock, and then it was like a light switch. It’s like—she remembered she hates me.”

“What thing got you worked up?” She tilted her head, causing her to look so young, almost childlike.

I shrugged. “We killed the bartender and the other guys she was involved with.”

“Desiderio!” Elvie’s eyes bulged, and her mouth fell open. “Well, this is probably why Ginata’s angry! You can’t go into another Sin’s territory and start killing their coven.”

I leaned forward. “I don’t think Ginata gives a shit about anyone but herself. She was like that before, and now it seems her ego has been inflated even more so. You really think she cares about Scout? No, she wants something she thinks she has.”

Elvie put up a finger to stop my rant. “Probably has. I am starting to get on board with this Young Blood Priestess theory. And the soulmates thing, for that matter. I didn’t believe in it before, but I think if it was true, you two would be the poster children for it.” She crossed her arms and sat back. “You guys are something else.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I shot back. I wasn’t sure if I liked her tone.

“The only time she wanted to touch you was after— I’m assuming here—” she put her hands up in innocence. “Slaughtering a group of people. We all know how you got your name,Wrath. But, Scout.” She shook her head and smirked. “I think she likes it too.”

I ran my tongue over my fangs, considering her words. “I mean, yeah.” I shrugged. Then I grinned. “She’s a doll, ain’t she?”

“A real peach.” She shook her head. “You know her aunt’s the same way?”

“What way?” I asked, standing. I hated sitting here while Scout went somewhere potentially dangerous.

“Gory. That’s how she got caught in the first place. She enjoys torturing her blood before drinking it.”

“Scout doesn’t do that,” I defended. “She told me she doesn’t drink from people—familiars,” I said that last word with distaste as if it was sour on my tongue.

“Hey, don’t knock it til you try it.” Elvie stood with me and grinned. “Some humans get off on it. Although I think it’s just them trying to play cool. Warm blood is better than bottled.”

She wasn’t wrong.

“Any pings on where she is? I can’t sit here all night.”

She sighed and went to her tablet. She clicked the screen a few times and then nodded.

“Yes and no. They’ve stopped. But I’m not entirely sure where they are.”

I grabbed my keys off the table. “It works. We’ll find it in the car. Come on.”

“It’s a spa.” Elvie frowned from the passenger’s side. “I think.”
