They didn’t react to my ranting, so I turned around to go into my room again.
Suddenly, a hand was on my arm, pulling me from the door. I swung, and my fist collided with the brute’s jaw. The other one cametowardme, and I ducked. He stumbled, and soon all three of us were fighting in the hallway.
Eventually, we heard a door open down the hall, and we paused just in time to see Ludovica come out. She blinked with surprise and cametowardus slowly.
“What’s going on here?”
“I need to get back to Scout. They want to take her.” I stood up straight and brushed off my clothes.
“Ginata wants her returned safely to our community,” one of her men declared.
Elvie nodded thoughtfully. “Okay. Well, if you won’t let Desiderio, why don’t I go in and get her?”
“Who are you?”
“I’m Ginata’s sister. This is our brother. Why don’t you let him go? I’ll go get the vampire woman you desire, and then Desiderio and I will leave peacefully.”
“Fuck you!” I laughed. My eyes went wide with incredulity. Did she really think I was just going to surrender Scout to these men? Elvie gave me a stern look, and I shut my mouth. She was planning something. I knew that face. I’d seen it many a time in our early Sin days.
“Give me the key card.”
I was hesitant, but I handed it to her. She pushed it against the door, and the hallway fell silent as she went in.
We waited. All three of us leaned against the opposite wall and stared at the door. Eventually, it opened, and the pair came out.
Ludovica was holding on to Scout, and Scout appeared to have been crying. Her eyes were bloodshot and her face, while having slept a full day, looked exhausted.
“Are you ready, Miss?”
Scout nodded but kept her eyes firmly on the ground.
“Yes. Thank you for coming. Will I see Ginata?”
I squinted.Thank you?
“Yes, Miss. We’re taking you directly to her. Do you have everything you need?”
“Yes. I just want to leave. Let’s go.” Her chin trembled, and I cocked my head. My eyes went wide as Ginata’s security team glared at me.
My mouth fell open as Elvie wrapped her small arms around Scout and hugged her tightly. “It’s fine. You’re safe now. Go.”
The men smirked at me triumphantly as Scout went with them to the elevator. She didn’t look back as the doors opened, and they stepped inside.
As soon as I heard the elevator's tiny bell descending, I snapped at Ludovica.
“What the fuck was that?”
“Desiderio, stop.” She was firm and motioned for me to return to my room. I glared at her but did as told. As soon as the door closed, I was back on her, demanding answers.
“What did you tell her that got her so upset? Why did she act like she wanted to leave with them?”I was throwing questions at her like knives, but I purposely avoided the one I wanted to ask.
Had Scout changed her mind?
“Desiderio, enough!” Elvie tossed up her hands. “She’s acting. We need to get Ginata in the same room as us. She’s purposely avoiding us, and this might be our only chance to see her.”
I paused, trying to understand where she was going with this. “What did you do, put a tracker on her or something?”
She laughed. “Am I some sort of super spy now? I just tossed my cell phone in her bag. We can follow the ping. Let me get my tablet, and we can see where they take her.”
