“When? Way back when, or at the movie theater?” I asked, and he let out a low chuckle. His lips found mine, and I could feel the rumble in his throat when he laughed.

“The second time. It’s odd to think about, knowing you,” he traced his fingers up my bare shoulders. “And loving you,” he brought his hand down to cup my breast over my dress. His thumb rubbed over my nipple, and I bit down on my lip. “So long ago. It’s like we were two different people.”

Slowly, he pushed my dress down to expose my body to the cold air. I arched my back as he shifted to take a nipple into his mouth. I gasped, and my hands went to his dark, inky hair. I tugged his roots as he flicked his tongue over my peak.

He grabbed my ass and lifted me up, setting me on the desk. I spread my legs and let him between them. I threw my head back as his lips returned to my neck.

“Are you sure we should still be here? Desi,” I called him by name when he didn’t answer. He let out a low growl as his fingers traced the line of my underwear.

“It doesn’t really matter. The mark is dead. We can do whatever.”

“People won’t miss him at the wedding?”

“Scout,” he whined. His cock throbbed against my thigh. He was hard and ready. He sighed and brought his eyes to meet mine. He looked like he could murder me. “Are you bothered by him in here with us?”

I scrunched up my nose. He knew me too well. I nodded, and he rolled his eyes. He took a step back and offered his hand to pull me off the desk. I hopped off and readjusted my dress.

“I’m not saying we can’t. I still want to, just not with an audience,” I explained.

Desi glared at me.“He’s dead.”

“Stop. Don’t make me feel bad about this.”

He gave me another look but then put his hands up. “Fine. I won’t fuck you in front of this dead guy, but I will not be leaving this wedding without having been inside you.”

He stormed toward the large oak doors and opened them more calmly than I had expected. I blinked and started forward. My head turned slightly toward the dead body, the monster.

“And you just leave them there?”

Desi rolled his eyes again and sighed. “I get paid to kill them, not to deal with the rest.”

“You’d think it’d be some sort of package deal.” I started to crack a smile, but his growl made me stop, straighten, and leave the room with him.

“You’re such a nerd. Get in, get out. Don’t linger.” He reminded me again. He reached for my hand as we started down the hallway. In the distance,we could hear the band playing in the grand hall for all of the partygoers.

“You were just lingering.” I pointed out. He huffed but said nothing else. The music grew louder as we walked toward it. I suddenly stopped in my tracks. He paused and cocked an eyebrow at me. “I can’t go back in there like this.” I looked down at my dress. It was black, as per usual, but my bare skin, of which was plenty, had streaks of blood in various places.

“You want to leave?” He offered. I pouted and looked back up at him.

“You promised me dancing.”

He laughed. “That I did. Let’s see what I can do.” Desi swiveled his head back and forth and then squeezed my hand. “Come with me.” We turned and went back the other way.

I wondered for a moment if he had been here before with how well he navigated the place. We turned to the left, the right, and then through some doors. He took me up a staircase and then down another hallway. Then, finally, we stopped atthedoor. He opened it, let me in, and then pointed to the room's far end. There were two large windows.

He placed his hand lightly on the small of my back and urged me toward it. I stepped closer and saw that he had found a balcony. Those were doors, not windows.

Desi and I stepped outside with the moon shining bright in the dark sky. The cool air hit my skin, and I shivered. Despite being cold by nature, goosebumps still appeared on my arms.

“Hm,” Desi closed the doors, and I went to the edge of the balcony, peering over the edge. He joined me, putting his arm over my shoulder. “I really thought we’d be able to hear the music.”

I smiled softly and turned to him. He was frowning and looking down at the ground. “That’s okay. I still had fun tonight. I made my first official kill. Like paid kill.” I boasted. He chuckled.

“That you did. I’m proud of you,Nerd. I figured I’d give you an easy one. A real asshole. It’s the ones who you don’t know why they’re in your chair that are hard.” His eyes took on afar-off lookasif replaying some memory.

I reached for his hand on the railing and tilted my head to rest on his arm.

“Do you like it? Your job?”
