Ben’s curious voice from across the room caused us all to turn. He was holding a green velvet journal. I stiffened and my eyes went wide. That wasn’t mine.
“What?” I asked before I could really register what was going on. He lifted it to show us. The gold lettering on the front.
For Jimmy
“You don’t have a diary,” Ronny said, giving me an odd look. I swallowed hard and watched as recognition flashed over his face. It was like watching all the lights click on in a house, room by room. He remembered, everything. All happiness drained out of the apartment as we watched Ronny’s reaction.
Rosa came over and took the baby. He gave her over willingly. He was too stunned to do much else. He stood and I joined him immediately.
“Ronny, we should talk about this alone,” I said carefully. His eyes were hard as he glared at me. I wasn’t sure if he was hearing me at all, but then we all turned when the front door clicked to open and Tate came in. He looked around the room, smiling wide.
“I’m home! Looks like you had a party,” he added cheerily. My stomach soured and I pressed my lips together.Tate, no.
And then, before I could stop it, Ronny snarled and rushed towards him, swinging his closed fist into Tate’s jaw. Tate dropped his backpack and stumbled backwards in confusion. Ronny only shook his head and spat at him.
“You fucking bastard.”
