“Me too. But it’ll work itself out and soon we won’t have to deal with any eggshells.”
I didn’t see Tate or Cara at all the first day Ronny came home. He was already at his place settled in, and I was stuck with the cheeriest asshole I had ever met.
Ronny was happy because he was back home and Tate was no where in sight.
“I can start healing in peace. I’m glad he finally got his own place and accepted that it’s over between you two. We get a fresh start.”
“Ronny, he’s still in the band. He’s going to be here all the time.”
“Yeah, but now he’s got the kid. He can’t linger and make excuses as to why he needs to be here. He’ll come to rehearse and that’s it. I get you all to myself.”
I sighed and wheeled him to his old room. He protested at first, but I was firm.
“It’s closer to the bathroom and this bed is lower. You can’t get into mine,” I explained lamely.
“You have a bathroom in your room.”
“Your wheelchair won’t fit. I’ve already got things ready in here. You’ll be fine,” I said sharply.
He was cranky about it for the first day, which gave me a headache that no over the counter medicine was helping. By the next day his fury had died down and he was back to being super chipper about ‘having me all to himself’.
Thankfully, our friends were still happy to help me out. He was living at my place yes, but I refused to be his live-in nurse. I took every opportunity I could to leave the apartment and visit the bookstore.
Tate welcomed me each time with open arms. Although we still lived in the same city it felt like we were worlds apart. I would come over and he’d stop whatever he was doing to hurry over and embrace me like I’d been lost at sea for the last five years.
Our brief time together would have been bliss if it wasn’t for one large, awkward elephant in the room. Cara was a month old now and becoming very loud and aware of life around her. Every time either of us started to give the other even a hint of bedroom eyes she’d start to stir.
At first we weren’t having sex because everything was just way too stressful and exhausting. But then it turned into this weird, thing in which there was just too much pressure. It had gotten to the point now where if things were getting hot and she started to cry for attention I would make an excuse to leave.
It was only a half excuse I would tell myself in the car on the way home. Ronny was getting suspicious about why I needed to leave often. It was none of his damn business, but that didn’t stop him from complaining about it.
I got home just as Cash was exiting Ronny’s room. He closed the door softly behind him and shot me a tired smile when he saw me.
“He’s got his night meds. He should be asleep for a bit. Jesus, how do you live with that?” he laughed as he followed me into the kitchen.
“What do you mean?” I asked, opening the freezer to pull out the bottle of vodka Dallas had stored in there the other day. It was really odd having him around more often. I wanted to trust him, but I knew there had to be some ulterior motive. I just didn’t know what it was yet. Either way, the vodka was a nice proof. I poured a large glass and added some cranberry juice from the fridge. I took a long gulp before looking back at Cash.
“All he did was bitch about you. Man, I was this close to telling him myself. I don’t know how you stayed with him as long as you did, honestly.”
Me either.
“I don’t remember him being like this with Tierney. It’s like you have a magic pu-”
I put my hand up and grimaced.
“Don’t you dare finish that sentence. And even if I did, wouldn’t you have gotten hooked?”
He smirked and reached for my glass. He took a sip and shrugged.
“You were just hitting your stride back then.”
I rolled my eyes and took the glass back.
“Ronny is just... Ronny. And now that he’s on those meds its all over-exaggerated right now. I seriously can not wait until they take those casts off everything.”
“Same. Helping him to and from the toilet is not fun. I’m gonna go, are you good here?” He glanced down at my drink. I nodded and took another large gulp.
“Yeah, I’m just gonna go get shit faced and watch a movie.”
