“Well, he doesn’t remember the baby being born or your break-up. I think it might only be a few days he’s lost. I didn’t really ask him about the last thing he remembered.”
“Probably should have,” Dallas added. Cash nodded.
“Yeah probably.”
“Hello,” I waved to get their attention. “What the hell am I supposed to do about this? Do I tell him?”
“I don’t know! Guy just almost died. I’m not going to be the one to break his heart,” Cash shot back at me sharply.
“Again,” Dallas smirked. Cash nodded.
“Again.”
I was this close to screaming. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, pinching the bridge of my nose. This wasn’t happening.
“He has no clue that we broke up? Or the baby?”
“Yes, but I feel like one of those things will be a lot less upsetting when he finds out.”
I glanced up at my brother. The rage that had been subdued these last few days was coming back to the surface. He always had a smart ass comment. He put up his hands in innocence as his eyes went wide.
“Hey, I’m here to help. Don’t get mad at me.”
“Why don’t we just tell the doctors and nurses? Let them decide what we tell him,” Cash suggested. Just then a nurse came into view, heading our way. We stopped talking and watched her as she came right to Ronny’s door.
“Are you visiting? There’s only supposed to be one person at a time.”
“Yes, we were just in there. We actually wanted to talk to someone about Ronny.”
“I have to go check on him, he pushed his buzzer. What’s wrong?”
No one answered for a beat. She took on a look of impatience and reached for the door.
“I broke up with him three days ago and he still thinks we’re together. He doesn’t remember,” I said quickly. Shame filled my face. Her mouth fell open into an “O” shape.
“Okay. I’m going to go check on him and then I’ll go tell a doctor.”
“Can we still visit him?”
“Yes, but don’t tell him anything about... that. Let’s get the doctor back in here first.”
I nodded and watched her shake her head as she went in to attend to Ronny.
Even though I couldn’t see him, just his door opening made my heart race. I wasn’t sure if I could handle seeing him all bandaged up. Thankfully, when she came back out, she told me that he was asleep and we should let him be.
I hated how happy I felt about that. I practically ran back to the waiting room.
It was rather quiet inside. Cash and Dallas were having a silent conversation with their expressions about me. I wanted to punch both of them, but I was too wrapped up in my own mind to do so. What a disaster. Eventually, I opted to put my head in my hands and wait for the doctor’s orders.
Some time later he returned to talk to us.
“Yes, so you mentioned he might be forgetting some things? I asked him some questions. His memory loss doesn’t seem too dramatic. Maybe a week? This is pretty common and it’s usually not permanent. He should regain his memory in a few days,” he assured us.
“Should we tell him then? About...” My brother tastefully pointed to me and cringed. I locked my jaw and rolled my eyes. Thanks, bro.
“Yes, so the nurse said that you recently broke up and he doesn’t remember it?” He paused for me to nod. “Okay, I would give him a few days to regain his memory. I would stay and try to be as supportive as you can.”
“Stay? I can’t stay. I’ve-”
