“I’m talking about doing what’s best for her.”
“Don’t pretend this is about her. You’re here because your bitch ass brother is dead.”
“I’ve seen what happens to children in unstable environments. You think I’m going to let a man like you have influence over her?” Shalice sneered.
Now the shit was personal because she didn’t know shit about him. Fist balling at his side, Mozzi stepped into her space, and his face shifted into a damning glower. It took major restraint not to knock her upside her potato head having ass.
“You don’t know shit about me,” he growled.
“I know enough,” Shalice responded with a head tilt. “I know her father is dead, and I would bet top dollar that you knowexactly what happened to him. That leaves her behind as his responsibility, which is now mine.”
“She’s my responsibility,” Coast’s voice cut through sharply.
Shalice peered past Mozzi at her. For the first time there was something almost respectful behind her eyes. The two of them had never crossed paths while she dated Sipes, surprisingly. When he did try to make plans with them, Shalice usually found some excuse not to come. Coast had no idea about their relationship aside from the fact that Sipes mentioned she was a lawyer and got him out of several jams over the years.
“I don’t doubt that, but she’s still my family too. This doesn’t have to be ugly.”
“It already is,” Mozzi said with no hesitance.
Nodding, Shalice retreated. “Then we’ll handle it accordingly.” She shot one last glance in Coast’s direction. “I wish you a smooth delivery. Rest up. You’re going to need your strength.” She turned toward the door to leave.
Those words weren’t out of kindness; she was issuing a warning. Coast’s chest tightened at the thought of someone trying to take her baby from her. She was glad Sipes was dead, and she didn’t have to fight him over custody or visitation. Things with Shalice were different and would require a different plan of attack.
“What the hell!” Coast shrieked once she exited.
“I don’t like that bitch,” Mozzi declared, facing her.
“That wasn’t a visit.”
“Nah, that was a move. Don’t sweat that shit. I’ll get my lawyer on it. Just focus on bringing our baby girl into this world.”
