“Thanks.”It sounded inadequate, but Spencer was rendered speechless at the first “when I was your age” remark that compared him more favorably to his father.

“But what else is going on with you?How are things going at work?”

Spencer was surprised at the question, but indulged his dad with stories about his days and clients.Mitch was a better audience than he expected, asking questions and laughing in the right places. He was so caught up in the conversation that he nearly walked past his building.

“I’d better go before you get cut off in the stairwell,” he said as he unlocked the front door.

“Okay.I’m going to call it a night, too.See you at Christmas?”

“Definitely.Looking forward to it.”He meant it.Between this, the assurance about his job, and Misty’s impending return, he had a lot to be thankful for this year.

Chapter Thirty-Six

The car pulled to astop, and Misty headed back to the trunk to get her luggage.Dealing with the airport on Thanksgiving weekend had been almost as exhausting as the busiest day at the bobsled combine, but it was over now with no more travel for more than a month.

She unlocked the apartment door to find a full party underway.“Oh, hey!”Jen called from the center of the room filled with fellow flight attendants.“I forgot you were coming back tonight.”

“Surprise.”She gave a little wave and hoped it would hide her annoyance. So much for inviting Spencer to her place.

“Is this the bobsledder?”one of the women asked.

“Yeah, that’s me.”

“No way!Can we get a selfie before the Games?”

Misty took off her coat to reveal the themed sweatshirt they’d asked everyone on the team to wear on their flights. The group perked up at the sight, gathered around her, and the guy on the end held out his phone.“That’s everyone.”

“Everybody say, ‘Go Team USA!’”

“But I’m from Denmark,” one of the guys protested.

“Just smile for the camera,” Misty said through gritted teeth, hoping her smile was still glued on.The flash went off, and the photographer Airdropped it to everyone.Misty looked down at her copy to see that everyone had followed her instructions and that she didn’t look too scary.

“Posting it now,” one of the flight attendants said.

“I’ll leave you to it.I’ve got to unpack.”As flattering as the moment was, Misty hadn’t been in the mood for selfies. She knew she’d have to suck it up, though.Things like this were what Ms.Coolidge, Dr.Schindler, and Belinda had alluded to in the interview, and this was just the beginning.
