When the day came, Misty took another look at the outfit she’d chosen, smoothed her ponytail, and added a light coat of her Glossier lip balm. This may have been for a sports team, not a fitness model shoot, but she still wanted to look good in the video. She rubbed her lucky duck’s head, then put him in her locker and met Tish on the training floor.
“It’s weird to see it so empty.”There would usually be a bunch of other people on the weights and machines, but no one was around today.
“Guess they’re keeping it clear for you.”Tish got her phone out.“The light’s good, you seem warmed up...are you ready?”
Misty took another look. This section of the training floor was clear, but other gymgoers and trainers went about their workouts in the cardio area and in the studios. It was like they’d crammed themselves into the other spaces now that this one was temporarily off-limits.
Through the crowd, she saw Spencer. He was adjusting the settings on a middle-aged man’s machine, and her lips turned up at the memory of him doing the same for her.The unknown guy was in good hands.
Spencer looked up from the Stairmaster. He was positioned in a way that would let him look right at the training floor, and he might have been looking at her.Just when she was about to convince herself she’d imagined it, he gave a small nod.Somehow, she knew it was meant only for her, and the sight filled her with the same energy and optimism she got from her lucky duck.
“Misty?”Tish’s voice cut into the moment.
“Let’s do this.”She sent a small smile in Spencer’s direction before getting into position.
Chapter Ten
“Good job today.”
His client nodded and left for the locker room.Spencer let out a silent sigh as he looked over that day’s results.Lawrence was pleasant enough, but very much one to go about the business of his workouts without additional conversation or commentary. It took a bit of effort to hear how he’d been doing between sessions or how the exercises were working for him. This client couldn’t have been any less like Misty, and Spencer wasn’t just saying that because Lawrence was five-foot-five and starting to go bald.
As if his thoughts had conjured her, a woman of her height and long auburn hair headed in his direction. She was part of the group leaving Studio B.
“Misty?”
She turned to face him, showing a bright blue sports bra, blue leggings, and acres of bare skin in between. Her face was flushed, and her limbs dripped with sweat. She was carrying a t-shirt under one arm and held a familiar-looking water bottle in her other hand.
“What are you doing here?”
“Just got out of Cardio in the Club. You know how that class is.If you’re not paying attention, you could miss a step and wind up on your ass.”She paused to drink from her water bottle but pulled away with a frown at the sight of the “Rinse and repeat (no, really)” message at the bottom. She walked to a fountain on the wall, and he followed.
“And I needed the distraction,” she said as she filled her bottle to the “Get ready to make a splash!”level at the top.
“What’s wrong?”
She took a long gulp of water before answering. He couldn’t take his eyes off her throat.“Waiting to hear about the combine is killing me,” she said as she finished drinking.
