Suddenly the stress of the forthcoming court proceedings crept up on her. Maybe because she’d had too much wine and allowed herself to relax for once, her inhibitions came tumbling down, and, to her horror, a tear escaped.

‘Hey.’ Jack rushed over and put his arm around her shoulders.

‘S… sorry…’ She quickly wiped away the tear.

‘What is it, Tara?’ he gently asked.

She met his gaze and shakily breathed in. ‘I’ve… a court hearing.’

‘Come on. Let’s sit on the sofa.’ Jack eased her up and led them to sit comfortably next to each other.

‘This will explain things,’ said Tara, grabbing the letter out of her bag. She’d kept it there, out of Calum’s sight.

Jack read the letter with a grim expression. No wonder she was tense, with this hanging over her.

‘Do you want me to come with you? As moral support?’ he asked earnestly.

Why not? she thought. Why shouldn’t she have Jack there to support her?

‘Yes, I would,’ she answered.

‘Then I will.’ He wrapped his arms tightly around her, all intentions of confronting her completely gone.
