‘Thanks.’ He leant over and kissed her full on the mouth like it was the most natural thing to do. She caught Dermot smiling with approval.

Walking up the sweeping gravel driveway, Daniel couldn’t help but feel in awe of the place. Treweham Hall was a huge, impressive sandstone building. Virginia creeper climbed the walls and stained-glass windows twinkled in the early evening light. He was greeted by a sombre-looking butler who seemed to be expecting his call. Once inside, his architectural mind appreciated the marble flooring, intricate wood-carved staircase and stone pillars. The butler directed Daniel through the mahogany-panelled hallway, which showcased various family portraits to what was described as ‘His Lordship’s private quarters.’

It felt surreal to Daniel being a guest in this environment. He only hoped his attire was suitable; surely they didn’t dress formally for dinner did they? If so, his grey chinos and white shirt would have to suffice. His worries were soon quelled when he saw Tobias and his wife Megan, who was holding their baby.

‘Mr James to see you, Sir.’

‘Thank you, Henry. Daniel, come and join us,’ called Tobias. He was still wearing black jeans and a polo shirt.

Megan smiled up at him. ‘Hello there, I’m just about to put this young man to bed, then I’ll join you.’

Daniel smiled, thinking what a nice, down-to-earth couple they were.

Soon all three were sat in a small dining room overlooking the south wing gardens of the Hall. Daniel felt at ease as he told Megan his intentions for Keeper’s Cottage. She seemed genuinely interested.

‘Well, here’s to you and Keeper’s Cottage, Daniel.’ She raised her wine glass.

‘Absolutely,’ agreed Tobias, raising his glass too.

Such kindness. Daniel swallowed the lump in his throat and blinked back the tears threatening to spill. ‘Thank you,’ he replied, then took a huge gulp of wine.
