Walking to the kitchen, she took her phone out of her purse and made a call. “Hey, it’s me. Did you find anything?” The person on the other end must answer her as she went quiet. “No, none of it makes sense to me either, but look, I think Melissa’s in danger. I can’t explain why over the phone, but can you put extraeyes on her? Tell me who and I can sort it this end.” She listened again. “Thanks, Sean.”
She hung up and glanced over at me. “If we’re doing this… us… I should probably tell you a bit more about my job.”
Helen
“You’re not a spy then?” he asked, looking at me with a worried expression. “Because I would assume anyone who used the phrase ‘eyes on’ was a spy.”
He made me want to smile for the first time since I’d heard the news about Thomas. “No, I’m a PA. A secretary.”
“For a spy?”
“No.”
“Thank fuck for that. I think I’d have a heart attack if I thought you were involved in anything like that.”
“Thomas is… was—I swallowed down the pain of talking about him like he wasn't here anymore—a fixer, a monster hunter, a dangerous man with a very particular set of skills.”
“LikeLiam Neesonin that film?” he asked, looking at me like I was making all this up.
I put my phone down and went to sit beside him again, liking the security his proximity brought me. “I guess. Thomas was in the SAS. Their youngest recruit in history. Him and his best friend joined together. His friend was shot in the head ona mission. Melissa… the woman I went to see today was his daughter.”
“Woah.”
“Thomas chased bad people. Child traffickers, paedophile rings, warlords, terrorists.”
Jax’s body tensed. “And you worked for him?”
I smiled proudly because I loved what that man did. He kept us all safe. “I did. If he was still alive, he’d kill me for telling you, but I need to talk about it. About him, and I can’t do that if you don’t know the whole story.”
“But, I mean, I know I saw his guns, but I didn’t think… shit, that is hardcore, Helen. And you’re okay with it?”
“Okay with what? Him saving people and ridding the world of monsters. Hell, yes. The building we work in is… was his headquarters. All his team work and train there.”
He stared at me. “I’ve been in that building. Where do they train? It looks like a normal office to me.”
“Ah, you need to see the basement. Three levels of… well, all I can really say is it’s much moreJames Bonddown there.”
Jax's expression darkened. “Helen, do your boys know? Surely they would never approve.”
“Approve? What the hell, Jax? Did anyone ever tell you they don’t approve of you running headfirst into a fire? And if they did, would you listen?”
“No, but—”
“But nothing. My job is not open for discussion or negotiation. Do you know that I wanted to be a nurse? When I had Jasper, Gary told me I couldn’t work when we had a kid. My job was to look after him, the baby, and our house. Nothing more. When we had three kids and we couldn’t manage on Gary’s wage anymore, he told me I had to find a job and I needed to work out a way to look after him, our three boys, and the house while I worked full-time. I have worked hard at a job I love and I’m bloody good at,and I won’t let anyone ever tell me if it’s suitable for me or that I shouldn’t be doing it.”
Jax held up his hands in submission. “God, you’re sexy when you’re all fired up. And, I’m sorry. I’m just shocked, but I would never tell you what to do.”
“Good. Now, can you distract me because it’s been a really shitty couple of days?”
“And by ‘distract you’, you mean…”
“Bend me over the sofa and make me scream your name.”
Chapter 27
Helen
“I’m going to go to the hospital to keep an eye on Melissa.” Sean appeared in front of my desk.
