Evan’s purr filled the room. Wes got in as close as he could, stroking her hair as his purr joined Evan’s.
The nurse who had been checking on him ran in. “You said that she’s spiraling?”
“Yeah. But I don’t want anyone from the Omega Ward anywhere near her, especially the person I punched in the face. I might get banned for that.” But Grace was worth it.
“I’ll get a doctor in here.” The nurse left.
“What happened?” Jett put a hand on my shoulder.
Riley came back in with an armful of blankets and started heaping them over Grace and Evan.
Quickly, I told them what I’d found, what I’d overheard, and what happened.
Wes looked stricken. “They did what? Fuck. Maybe I shouldn’t have tried to get to her.”
I shook my head. “I think it had to do with the Office of Designation Management questioning her. The nurse called her avariant.”
“Can they even do that?” Wes asked.
“I don’t think so.” I shook my head.
Wes pulled a chair over to the bed and stroked her hair, murmuring to Grace. Evan kept purring.
I sat down on the couch, Jett next to me, and emailed our lawyer everything.
A security guard came into the room. He stared at me. “You.” He looked at Wes and sighed. “And you.”
“Ban me if you’d like. But keeping her locked in a room and disabling her monitors while she spiraled is malpractice.” I should probably email people at the hospital, too.
Hmmm. Did I know anyone on the hospital’s board?
“Excuse me.” A female doctor brushed past the guard, with the nurse behind her.
“This is my mate, it’s okay. Liz already went home, or I’d have her come, too,” the nurse assured us.
“What happened?” The doctor started checking her the best she could with Grace wedged between Spencer and Evan.
I repeated what I’d found.
“Is she on any medications?” the doctor asked.
“No.” Wes shook his head.
The nurse hooked her up to a small, portable monitor.
“This is the right place for her to be, but I’m going to give her a shot to help things along.” The doctor held a syringe.
The security guard stood there. He sighed and looked at me. “You punched a nurse.”
I looked at Jett. “Should I call the police? What that nurse did has to be some sort of assault.”
“I feel like the police not letting Evan and Grace have someone in there with them when they were being questioned is illegal?” Wes added.
Jett shook his head. “They just wanted information, so it’s technically not illegal, just not general protocol. At least in Rockland, it could be different here.”
“Do you need me to leave?” I eyed the security guard.
“Doc says not to kick you out, but you’re banned from the Omega Ward. It’s protocol.” The security guard looked like it had been a long day.
