Chapter One

Evan

“Evan, you can go to the waiting room now. Thank you,” the police officer stated.

“Okay. Thanks. Where’s my sister?” I asked, glancing around. As soon as our pack arrived at the hospital, we’d been split up and questioned by both the police and the Bureau of Investigation. There were also people who I suspected were from the Office of Designation Management, because they were asking about Rosalind, the woman Grace had thought was her mom.

“I’m sure she’s either in the waiting room or still being questioned.” She turned to talk to someone from the Bureau of Investigation.

Hopefully she wasn’t alone. They hadn’t let me stay with her. While I’d asked for one of my alphas, or at least someone from the Center, to be there with me during questioning, I’d just gotten tired looks and been told that I wasn’t in trouble and things would go so much faster if I just cooperated.

It was clear that I wasn’t a suspect, that they were just trying to figure out what the fuck was going on. Also, I couldn’t wait to find out who Cassidy Silvers was and why the professor’s alpha was arrested for trafficking her, not Grace.

Looking around, I didn’t see anyone from my pack. Where did I even go? There were several waiting rooms here. Spencer and Grace had also been taken to different parts of the hospital–him for emergency surgery and her because she had another seizure.

I sent a message to the group chat, since I’d like to find my sister.

Me

Where are you all? Where’s Riley?

Jett

Bren and Wes are still being questioned. I’m waiting for Riley. Ask about Spencer and Grace?

Me

Will do.

Wes was livid–-I could feel it through the bond. Brennan, too, was close to breaking. Once again, someone attacked our pack, and the alphas hadn’t been able to stop it.

“Hey, can you tell me where my mate is?” I asked the woman at the information desk.

“ID?” She snapped her gum, looked at my ID, and went to her computer. “Wait in the family waiting room for intensive care on the second floor. I’ll note that you’re there.”

“Thanks. Wait, Grace isn’t in the Omega Ward?” I scanned the directory on the nearby pole. Omega Ward was on the third floor.

She shook her head. “There’s no Grace listed in your pack. This is for your alpha, Spencer.”

“Oh, okay.” That was my next question, anyway. “Could you please tell me where Grace Ellington is? She’s Spencer’s mate and was brought in at the same time. They just mated, so the paperwork for her to be part of the pack isn’t finished.” I turned on the charm.

Giving me a look that said she was immune to omega wiles, she typed on her computer.

“Sorry. You’re not her emergency contact. But one of your packmates who’s mated to her can ask about her.” With a wave of her hand, she went to help someone behind me.

Not her emergency contact? Yeah, I was going to have to fix that.

I went up to the second floor and added what I found to the group chat.

Me

Unless you want me to wait with you, I’m heading up to the second floor where Spencer is. They won’t tell me anything about Grace. Wes has to ask.

Jett

Go find Spencer. We’ll meet you there.

At the desk on the second floor, I tried again to get information on Grace. She said she’d do what she could, and I should wait. The family waiting room was stuffy and smelled of sadness and fear.
