“What do you mean?I only left there an hour ago.”
“Yes, and in that time Billing and Peters confiscated every piece of equipment and shut down your office based on their theory that you are promoting terrorist activities right here in the good ole U.S. of A.They’re questioning your people now.”
“Stop them, Cain.Stop them now or so help me God, you’ll be going down with me.”He laughed, shaking his head.
“Oh, Marilyn you really are a hoot sometimes. You’re a wanted woman.A badly wanted woman and those men who were asking for you, are untouchable, unstoppable, and unyielding. They will not be deterred at this point my little magnolia.”
“Stop with your bullshit southern accent, Cain.I know you.I know what a fucking liar you are.Don’t forget that I know everything about you,” she sneered.
He slammed his hand on his desk, his hulking body leaning forward. The ruddy cheeks giving him a jolly Saint Nick appearance in spite of the fact that he was closer to Satan than Santa.
“Don’t threaten me, Marilyn. You’ll be dead before you hit the parking lot.I have evidence on you as well.Killing all those poor young men in Baltimore?Tsk, tsk, tsk,” he grinned. Her eyes went wide and she took a seat near the desk.“That’s right, sugar, we’ve already heard.Such a tragedy. But you clearly are losing your skills. The young ladies at the townhomes in Georgetown all made it.Every last one is still alive thanks to those undeterred men.”
“Cain you have to help me get out of the city.”
“You haven’t delivered on our deal, honey. Now, I asked you to find out what Peters and Billings were working on in that dungeon of theirs and you haven’t been able to tell me yet.I’ve let you run amuck spending other people’s money under the guise of following the law just so you can get to the real money.”
“That’s right, Cain. The real money.Top secret military secrets and documents that you get to sell to the highest bidder and webothget to profit from.I’m the genius behind all of this!I’m the one that figured out how to start this ball rolling!Me!Not you.You can barely answer your own damn email.”
“Careful, sugar, all that yelling is stressing you out and it’s showing on your skin,” he said with a grin.
“I despise you old man.”
“Yes, I’m aware my dear, sweet daughter.I’m well aware. If your mother had kept her legs together, you wouldn’t be here.Blame her, not me.”
“My mother was a seventeen-year-old girl taking care of your damn children when you raped her!”
“I did no such thing,” he said frowning at her.“She was more than willing to give herself to me.It’s not like she was a virgin or anything. She’d tasted more than a few men before she got to me.Now, I should have been more careful and worn a condom, but then you wouldn’t be here.”
“There are days I wish I weren’t.”
“I’ve given you a good life, Marilyn. You went to the best schools, just like my other children.I got you this job.”
“And I’m grateful for all of that but I will not take the fall for this alone. If I go down, you will go down.I have everything Cain.Everything.Photos, emails, letters, all of them. All saved on a disc, safely tucked away from you and your minions.”
“Don’t be so sure about that, honey. My minions are pretty damn smart.”The buzz of his speaker made both of them still.“Yes, Charlotte?”
“There are three men here to see you. They said they were sent by Admiral Peters and General Billings.”
“Give me one moment, please.”He ended the connection and smiled at her.“I suggest you skedaddle, darlin’.Take the side door and wait a few moments then leave.Hide, Marilyn.Hide good. These boys know what they’re doin’ and they will find you.”
“And if they find me, they’ll find you, Cain.Just remember that.”
“Oh, I know,” he grinned, “but I’m not the one that killed that young sergeant for no reason.”
“I thought he knew something about what we were doing.I had no idea it was about something else!”
“Nevertheless, you’ll go to jail for that one, honey.”
She shook her head in disdain, desperately wanting to spit on him.Instead, she turned and left through the side door.
Straightening his jacket, he was prepared for what was coming his way.And by prepared, he meant he had a pocket full of lies and the ability to make people believe them.
CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
“AJ?They found Marilyn Sanders home. It’s in Alexandria near old town.I say we check it out since she’s MIA again,” said Tanner.
“Agree,” he nodded. When their phones all pinged at the same time, they hit the link as Hiro drove the route.
