“Keep the car,” he held out the key and her mobile.

“We have a car.”

“Keep it.”

“You just want me to not drink.” She laughed like it was a joke. It was true.

But naive as she still was in certain things, Amaal accepted the key and her mobile. “Thanks. How will you go?”

He turned and began striding.

This closeness, this concern, this urge to care was breaking through his static. He did not want it to. Samar strode down the quiet Srinagar road, breathing in the spring air of this night. He had never been in such a position before, with so many crossroads running over him, all meandering through him, clouding not only his judgement but his ability to function.

Nothing was making sense anymore.

Samar read the message just as the people around him broke into applause. He glanced up, and Atharva was walking out of the house with Iram Haider’s hand in his. Smiling. As the gathering of their party members,hisparty’s members closed in on them, as this party, supposedly arranged to celebrate their manifesto launch success turned into what was looking like a glorified engagement party, Samar closed his eyes.

Not now.The boiling rage inside him bubbled back down.

“All speculations can be put to rest now,” Atharva announced. “Iram and I are together. Noora, you won the round 6-1, if I am not mistaken… I see you all as my family, my home, and therefore Iram and I wanted to share this first with you all. Thank you for being here and always keeping my confidence. I have invested my faith in not only the work you do, but also in the people you are. You too Noora, for the most part.”

Samar held his mobile between his hands and typed.

His mobile rang. Samar hit Accept and pressed it to his ear.
