“Touché, baby. Two can play at that game.”

Rolling my eyes, I could feel the awkwardness I’d hoped we’d passed creeping in again.

“My suggestion is that we get changed. Then we head to the restaurant downstairs and enjoy some lunch and a drink.”

“Aren’t you afraid we’ll be seen?”

He moved so he was standing behind me. “I was very careful and we’re honeymooners. I think we can blend in. Just whatever you change into, try not to look like an assassin.”

“Is that what I looked like before?”

“The red dress did make you look very dangerous.”

We both stared at each other, uncertain how we were supposed to act, which was ridiculous. “Well, you don’t need to worry about that. I plan on throwing it away.”

He said nothing, remaining where he was in silence as he’d done countless times in New Orleans. When I skirted around him, a huge part of me wanted him to stop me from going anywhere.

To toss me on the bed and make good on our honeymoon status.

But he didn’t.

He merely allowed me to walk unimpeded toward the suitcases, not even bothering to watch me walk away.

I know because I looked.

CHAPTER 21

Donatello

“You and I are going to need to have a conversation after you help bring my sister back safely.”

While there was clear annoyance in Alexander’s voice, there was also amusement. When I’d talked to him earlier, I’d had the rare opportunity of hearing him curse in French.

The man could swear like a sailor. Or more appropriately, like his father. While the occurrence was rare, when he did, you knew how furious he was.

Not that I could blame him. Yes, I’d been quick in discovering where his beloved sister had been hiding, but after that, everything had been a clusterfuck.

And I was to blame.

“I understand, sir. I fucked up.”

“Yeah, you did,” he was quick to snap. “However, you found her. That’s the most important thing.”

“She didn’t make it easy.”

His chuckle was soft. “She never does. Incidentally, this speed date you mentioned is nowhere to be found.”

I’d been forced to tell him what I’d held back. Every scrap of information could be needed to end this ridiculous nightmare. “They went to great lengths to keep an eye on her.”

“We had her house swept. One additional bug in her briefcases. You were right, Donatello. A very sophisticated design. Nothing our security team has ever seen. Designed by a company, only recently put into production and owned by what appears to be a prominent member of the Brotherhood. From what I was told, it’s almost impossible to decipher the bug’s existence.”

There was the confirmation we needed.

Every business building and every home was swept on a regular basis. New technology was always on the horizon. “I’ll keep her safe.”

“I know you will. We’re leaving in a few hours. With any luck, we should be there very late tomorrow night. We’ll need to rent a vehicle and the trip is around three hours. Just stay where you are and we’ll come to you.”

“We’ll be waiting. Anything happening in Miami with Sinclair and Montgomery?”
