I’m not sure which of us gives in first, but suddenly I’m erupting into her, coming so damn hard my knees buckle, and it takes all I have to remain on my feet as Chloe shakes around me. Once the aftershocks subside, I pull out of her and help her off the counter. She holds on to my shoulders as I tug her dress back down, smoothing out the wrinkles that areveryobvious. Her hair is no longer in a clean updo, many pieces sticking out, and her makeup is smudged from having her mouth on me.

“You’re gorgeous,” I tell her.

“I’m sweaty and a mess.”

“Still gorgeous.”

She smiles, then wraps her arms around my neck, but I grab her hips and hold her away.

“No,” I say. “You can’t touch me right now. If you do, I might have to fuck you again, and then everyone willdefinitelyknow what happened in here.”

She looks down at her dress. “Uh, I think they’re already going to.” She takes a step back. “But I understand. We probably should go back out there before someone comes looking for us.”

“You can say Lawson’s name.”

She laughs and leans in for a kiss, but I shake my head.

“Really? You don’t trust yourself with just a kiss?”

“When it comes to you? Not at all.”

She tucks her lips together, trying to hide her grin, but I see it anyway.

“I’ll see you out there?”

I nod, hating when she takes a steadying breath, then pulls open the door. She’s just stepped through it when I grab her wrist, and she stops, turning toward me.

“Don’t even think about cleaning that up, Clover. I want to spend the rest of the night knowing my cum is drying on my wife’s legs, got it?”

She gulps. “Got it.”

I pat her ass and send her on her way. I spend the next five minutes trying to talk my cock back down, and when it doesn’t work, I go back to the reception and pray nobody notices. Thankfully, nobody seems to pay me much attention as I make my way back to the party. I slip into the crowd like I never left, nobody the wiser to what just transpired.

“Chloe!”

I turn at the mention of my wife, but I don’t see anyone I recognize. Then someone moves, and I see her. I smile and move to walk toward her but stop when I notice she’s not alone. There’s a woman talking to her, and I recognize her instantly. She’s the wife of the Serpents’ first captain, who is around here somewhere.

“Wow, I was not expecting to see you here,” Avery says. “How do you know Reed and Auden?”

“Uh, Hutch—sorry,Reed—is my husband’s teammate.”

“Your husband? You’re married to a Serpents player? How come I didn’t know this? We should have met way before now.”

“I’ve been out of the country on assignment,” Chloe tells her. “I’m here with Callum Keller.”

“Oh! I know him. He’s grumpy, no offense, but still very kind.”

Chloe laughs. “None taken, though that’s not the Callum I know.”

“Well, anyway,” Avery says, “I’m glad I ran into you. I’ve had a few drinks, and I probably shouldn’t be saying this, but…you’re it. We absolutelylovedthe second interview on Wednesday, and we plan to officially offer you the position once we get our ducks in a row.”

She had a second interview? She didn’t tell me. It must have happened when I was doing that event at the middle school that I agreed to months ago. Is there a reason she hid it from me? Was she afraid to say something to jinx it? Or is she planning…

No.

I don’t let myself think. She couldn’t be leaving again. Not after everything…right? My breath disappears, or at least that’s what it feels like, because suddenly I’m struggling for air and can’t seem to get enough of it.

Fuck, not now. Please not now.
