"The committee was impressed," he said. "Particularly with the trust structure analysis. Henderson asked me afterward where I'd been hiding you."
"What did you tell him?"
"That I hadn't been hiding you. That you'd been there the entire time, and the fact that he hadn't noticed was his problem, not yours."
The sentence landed somewhere between professional advocacy and personal declaration, and I could not determine, from the steadiness of his voice or the neutrality of his expression, which one he'd intended. Both, possibly. Robert operated on multiple frequencies simultaneously, and I was only beginning to learn how to tune into all of them at once.
"Can I ask you something?" I said.
"Yes."
"The Whitfield review. You said you'd been considering me for the liaison role since then. Six months. But you didn't offer it to me until the engagement ended." I held his gaze. "Why?"
The question sat between us on the white tablecloth, next to the wine glasses and the candles and whatever was building in the diminishing space between his silence and my patience.
"Because I don't recruit people who are in the middle of something," he said. "You were engaged. You were building a life. The role would have complicated that, and I wasn't willing to be the reason your life became more complicated than it already was."
"That's very noble."
"It's not noble. It's practical." He turned the wine glass by its stem, a gesture I'd never seen him make, and I recognised it for what it was: the first fidget I had ever observed from Robert Harrington. The first sign that his body was doing something his mind had not authorised. "Complicated employees make mistakes. Distracted analysts miss patterns. I needed you focused."
"And now?"
"Now you're not engaged. And you're focused. And the presentation today confirmed what I already knew, which is that you are, without qualification, the best mind in that building." He stopped turning the glass. His eyes met mine with the quality of attention that I had been watching for three years and that had, in the close quarters of a candlelit room, become something I could no longer file under professional assessment. "The question is whether you're going to ask me what you actually want to ask me, or whether we're going to continue discussing the Davids acquisition until the wine runs out."
My heart was beating in my throat. In my wrists. In the soft hollow beneath my collarbones where the candlelight was doing things to my skin that I was pretending not to notice.
"What happened to your marriage?" I asked. It was not the question I'd planned, and it was exactly the right question, because Robert's expression shifted in a way I had never seen before. Not the micro-expression. Not the controlled recalibration. Something slower and more honest, like a door being opened by someone who had forgotten, momentarily, to check who was on the other side.
"Claudette left twelve years ago," he said. "She was right to leave. I was building something that required the kind of attention that doesn't leave room for a marriage. She told me once that living with me was like living with a beautiful machine." He turned the wine glass by its stem. The first fidget I had ever observed from Robert Harrington, and the strategist in me noted: he's vulnerable, this is the emotional access the plan needs, file it. But the woman holding the wine glass across from him noted something the strategist had not prepared for: he was in pain. Real, twelve-year-old, still-unresolved pain. Andthe pain was not useful. It was just sad. The plan did not have a category for sad.
"And since then?"
"Since then I've been a machine. A useful one. A successful one. But a machine." He looked at me, and the candlelight caught something in his eyes that the strategist would have called opportunity and the woman across the table was beginning to call something else. Something without a name yet. Something that made the wine taste different.
"Angry?"
"Angry because I recognised it. How the argument was built. The architecture of it. The quality of attention that had gone into every sentence." His voice had dropped. Not the half-register shift I'd been tracking. Something quieter. More private. "I recognised it because it was the way I think. And I had never, in thirty years of running that company, met someone who thought the way I did. And the fact that she was engaged to my son, who could not have identified a regulatory vulnerability if it had been printed on his forehead, made me so angry I cancelled three meetings and went home early."
The room had become very small. The candles were the only light. His face was close enough that I could see the individual lines around his eyes, the visible architecture of a man who had spent fifty-three years making decisions and was, in this moment, struggling with one.
"Robert," I said. His name in my mouth was supposed to be a move. A calibrated intimacy. But it came out softer than I'd planned, and the softness was not performed.
"Lily."
Neither of us moved. The distance between us was perhaps eighteen inches, occupied by candlelight and wine glasses and three years of professional discipline and the charge that exists in the space between two people who have been wanting the same thing and have both, independently, decided to stop pretending they don't.
He reached across the table. Not quickly. Not with the urgency of a man whose control had snapped. Slowly, deliberately, with the focused attention he applied to everything, and his fingers found mine where they rested on the tablecloth. The contact was specific. His thumb against my wrist, pressing gently into the pulse point, and I knew he could feel my heartbeat because his eyes changed when he found it, something flickering across his face that looked like recognition.
"I need you to understand something," he said, his thumb still against my pulse. "This is not strategic. This is not an extension of the professional arrangement. This is separate. And if you want it to stop, tell me now, and it stops, and the professional relationship continues exactly as it was."
The word strategic hit me like cold water. Because he was telling me this wasn't strategic for him. And I was sitting across from him running a strategy. And the distance between those two truths was the distance between the woman I was pretending to be and the woman I was afraid I was becoming.
"I don't want it to stop," I said. And the terrifying thing was that I meant it. Not for the plan. For me. And the more terrifying thing was that meaning it was also strategically useful — the plan needed this sincerity, needed precisely this collapse of the boundary between operative and woman — and I could not tell, sitting there with his thumb on my pulse, which truth had arrived first: the wanting or the knowing that the wantingserved the architecture. They had fused somewhere in the candlelight, and the fusion was either the plan's greatest success or its first real failure, and I did not know which.
"Then come here."
I stood. He stood. The table was between us and then it wasn't, because I walked around it and he met me halfway, and his hands found my waist with the same deliberate precision he applied to everything, as if touch were a form of communication and every point of contact was a sentence he intended to finish.
