“One of my men, Matteo Conti, tried to rape Kira. He needs to die for it.”
All the air leaves Gregor’s body as he stumbles back. “What?”
“You heard me. He needs to die for it.”
“How could you let that happen? You were supposed to protect my daughter.”
“She wasn’t raped. She got away in time. And now I’m going to protect her by killing Matteo. But I’ll need yours and Maksim’s help. It’s why we made a deal in the first place: to help each other.”
“But won’t killing one of your men lead to a war? A war we want to prevent?”
“Maybe. But isn’t it worth killing the fucker who tried to rape your daughter?”
“Kira is your responsibility now. Not mine. And yes, I want any man who’s hurt her dead. Including you. But I agreed to peace with you for the sake of my entire family. But if you’re going to plunge us into a war, I can’t stand for that. Kira will only end up hurt. So no. I can’t help you with this, Enzo. You shouldn’t kill one of your men. You shouldn’t put my daughter in danger.”
“Then I’ll do this myself,” I snarl before leaving his house. If Gregor doesn’t want to help me, fine. Then I’ll kill Matteo by myself and worry about the consequences later.
Chapter Thirteen
Enzo
Matteo opens the door to his house, giving me a big smile like nothing is wrong. Like he didn’t try to rape my wife. Never have I felt this strong need to protect a woman before. But with Kira, I want to keep her safe. She frustrates me but she also challenges me and I love that.
And I’m not going to let her be a victim to this asshole. A friend I thought I could trust. Someone who betrayed me. I’m not going to stand for it.
“Enzo,” Matteo exclaims. “What are you doing here? You rarely come by.”
“That’s because you usually come to my club to talk. I thought, since we’re friends, it would be a good idea to spend some time together. Talk.”
He raises an eyebrow. “Talk?”
“Yes. Can’t friends talk with each other?”
“Of course they can but you’re usually not one to talk.”
“Well, I feel like talking now.” I brush past him as I walk inside. I’m not going to let Matteo stop me from doing this. He needs to face the consequences for what he did.
“So what’s going on?” he asks, slowly closing the door behind him. A quick look around the foyer of his house reveals the money he’s made… from me. He’s become a rich man and I let it happen and now this fucker thinks he gets to hurt my wife?
“I saw you looking at my wife.” I face him head on. I’m not the kind of man to hide.
Matteo huffs, crossing his arms. “When did I do that?”
“At my club. Earlier today. You looked at her.”
“I have eyes. It is what it is. I didn’t mean any offense.”
“But you did mean offense, Matteo. You tried to rape her.”
He blinks. “What are you talking about?”
“You tried to rape her. She told me everything.”
“And you believe her? We’ve been friends for years, Enzo. You’re just going to believe the word of a woman you’ve only known for a month?”
“I made a vow to marry Kira. I made a promise of peace. And you’re going to shit on that by trying to rape her? Why would you do that?” I clench my hands into fists. It’s taking everything I have not to kill him right in this moment. Because he used to be my friend, I’m giving him the courtesy of responding to me.
“I didn’t try to rape her. Your wife is crazy. She tried flirting with me the first moment we met. She’s trouble. You know it. I know it. Your aunt keeps telling everyone how bad she is. She’s making up lies.”
