Maybe there was a light at the end of this dark tunnel. Maybe now both of us could start healing. Only time would tell.
SIXTY
KADE
I woke up to a text notification. I didn’t want to move and had every intention of staying snuggled against Evelyn. We had only fallen asleep a couple of hours ago when it was still light and now the glow of the city lights filtered into the room as the sky began to darken.
Rolling over, I looked at my phone.
UNKNOWN:
20 million for damages. Onorato St. Tomorrow. 8 PM.
My blood began to boil when a picture came through of Evelyn walking out of RSS. Fucking Stefanos.
UNKNOWN:
Or she will pay.
Me:
You don’t want tofuck with me.
UNKNOWN:
No. You don’t want to fuck with me, Ghost. 20 Million or I take her as payment.
Me:
And if I don’t agree with any of it?
UNKNOWN:
Then maybe this will be an incentive for you…
Lennie popped on the screen next, with her mouth taped and tears streaming down her face. My heart pounded. Lennie had nothing to do with this. She was a dear friend and was not in the dark world that I lived in.
Me:
Leave her out of this.
UNKNOWN:
You know my terms. Or she will lose her life.
Me:
I will be there tomorrow. If you hurt her, the deal is off.
UNKNOWN:
See you tomorrow, amigo.
I scoffed at his last text.Amigo.Biggest fucking joke I’d ever heard. I got out of bed and threw on gray sweatpants before rushing to my office. I dialed Machine at the hospital and filled him in on the situation when he answered.
“How are you feeling?” I asked when I ran out of things to say about the mess I was in.
“Alive,” Machine grumbled.
