XO, Kade

PS- I woke up to Alfredosuffocating me. I’m not sure if he was trying to kill me or snuggle.

The note made me smile. The smile slowly faded when the events from yesterday hit me like a train.

I went through the motions and somehow made it to work on time. Flowers sat on my desk with a card from Kade. Thankfully, no one on the team asked questions.

Everything was going smoothly until I heard a familiar voice enter the Hive.

“Kade, I want to meet this new girl who is taking over my account.”

I felt my face drain of color as I met the eyes of the devil himself.

“Mr. Ricci, I’d like you to meet Evelyn–”

My heart pounded and my stomach roiled. Every instinct was screaming at me to run, but there was nowhere to go. Standing before me was the man who’d destroyed my family. Anthony. Fucking. Ricci.

I was so fucked.

THIRTY-SEVEN

EVELYN

“Why the fuck is she here?” Anthony roared, interrupting Kade while pointing at me.

Kade looked at Anthony and I with a puzzled expression. “You two know each other?”

“I would think so, considering she’s my stepdaughter,” Anthony seethed, balling his hands into fists at his sides.

Before standing up, I discreetly sent a 911 code to Chief to let him know my cover was blown.

I stood up and put my hands out like I was caging a rabid animal. “Kade, I can explain...”

Kade’s face turned bright red from rage. Machine walked into the Hive and instructed everyone to leave the room except us.

“It’s quite simple, Ghost, you have managed to let the ONE person who I did not want to have access to my files to have access.” Ricci glared at all of us. “Kade, meet Evelyn Myers, aka my stepdaughter.” A cruel smile spread on his lips. “Tell me, Evelyn. How’s mother dearest doing?”

I lunged at him but was intercepted by Kade’s arm around my waist.

Ricci laughed. “So, I take it you’ve heard the news then.”

A shrill shriek ripped from my lips as I tried to lunge at Ricci again while Kade pulled me back. Burning hot rage scorched through every cell of my being. “Enough, Evelyn,” he sneered at me.

I wished the ground would open beneath me and swallow me whole. This couldn’t be happening. Especially the day after my mother died.

Machine placed a hand on Ricci’s shoulder, and raised his eyebrows, indicating it was time to leave. As they got to the door, Ricci spun around. “You better fucking clean up your mess or I’ll–”

Kade cut him off. “I would think twice before you finish that sentence. I’ll be in touch soon.”

When the door clicked shut, Kade spun to me and pinned me to my desk by my throat. I wheezed from the impact and tried to escape Kade’s intense hold.

“What the actual fuck, Evelyn?” He squeezed harder. “Who the fuck are you?”

My eyes began to lose focus from the lack of oxygen. Just as I was about to fully black out, Kade released his hold on me. I coughed and sputtered while rubbing my neck that was surely bruised from his fingers.

“Kade–”

My phone began to ring. When I didn’t answer and tried to speak again, my phone began to ring again. Glancing down, the caller ID showed it was the facility my mother had lived at before shedied.
