She brushes her fingers along the seat. “Where is your helmet?”
I chuckle. “I don’t wear a helmet, sweetheart.”
“Why? Aren’t you afraid of crashing and dying without one?”
I shake my head. “No, if I die on the open road, then I die a good death.”
Chapter 30
Blake
“If I die on the open road, then I die a good death…”
Well, that’s just dumb, I think, but I guess I won’t tell him that. “Do you work on these often?” I point at the bike.
He raises his brow. “Only when pretty women run me over on the road.”
I snap my gaze at him. “I didnotrun you over!” I stomp my foot like a child.Wait. He just called me pretty.
“I was basically road kill after you got done with me.” He walks toward me and leans against his bike, laughing.
I roll my eyes. “You are so dramatic, Hunter. I swear to God.”
He’s still laughing as he stands up straighter and closes the distance between us. Slowly, his laughter fades, and a look of desire forms on his face as he walks me backward until my back gently touches a toolbox. He leans in close to my ear, and it takes everything in me not to breathe and ruin this moment.
“I would chance to be roadkill a second time if it meant meeting you,” he growls, and his breath glides across my skin.
Goosebumps rise along my neck, and my breath comes faster. I want him to press his lips against the skin he keeps grazing with them. I want him to wrap me in his arms and take away all of my anxiety and worries. I want…Wait.
I press my hand against his chest and lightly push him off of me. I don’t have time to do this. I need to go find Charlie and make sure she is safe. I need to get my life figured the fuck out.
He takes the hint and steps back with his arms held up in defeat.
My cheeks heat as I step around him and head toward the door. I need to put some distance between us, or we will never make it through the night sleeping next to one another. Especially not with how much I wanted him to touch me just now.
I am quickly turned back around and he slams his lips against mine, taking the breath from my lungs. I instantly melt against him and open my mouth for him as he groans against me. He walks me backward until my back lands on the door and pushes his body against mine.
It’s all I can do not to sob with relief at his hands on me.
Suddenly, he pulls away, gasping for air as he takes a step back and looks at me with a hooded gaze.
Before I can stop him, he opens the door and ushers me out.
Hunter locks the door behind us as he guides me back toward the bonfire. Charlie rushes toward me with a huge smile on her face. “Mommy, Mommy, look!” She points at the group of kids waiting for her. “I made new friends!” She is so happy that she is practically bouncing from heel to heel.
I lean down and brush some loose hair from her face. “I’m so glad, baby. Go play.”
She nods and bounds toward the other kids again.
Hunter’s voice comes from behind me, and I turn to look at him. “She is really loving it here, huh?”
I nod. “She told me she made new friends.” I laugh.
“I find it hard to believe that she doesn’t make friends everywhere she goes. Her personality is consuming.” His soft smile lands on my child, and I can’t help my stomach flip-flop inside me.
“Usually, she is pretty shy around new kids. But it would seem that she fits right in with this crowd.”
He nods. “Do you want me to go grab her a water or something? It looks like her face is a little red from running around.”
