The frown on my face must have concerned him, because he got up and came to stand next to me.
“What’s wrong, man?”
I looked at my best friend and shook my head. “Why the fuck is this happening now? I have a life here with Adam.”
“I thought this was what you wanted?”
I released a weighted sigh. “I did for a long damn time, but my priorities have changed. The responsibility and challenges that go along with being the head of security for a rock band are the things I was looking for. Not sitting in an office, calculating quotes for potential clients. And, more importantly, that was before Adam came along.”
I knew I’d found something rare with Adam, at least for me. I didn’t want to leave him. And there was no way I could.
GQ looked concerned.
“What’s wrong?” I knew he was holding something back. “Jesse, just say what’s on your mind.”
He curled his lips in and nodded, then looked me straight in the eye. “I’m gonna play devil’s advocate here for a minute, and don’t get mad at me. I’m saying this as your friend.”
I nodded slowly, waiting for him to share his insight.
“We don’t know what’s going to happen in the future. Just look at what happened with Nate. But this might be the only opportunity you get to interview with them. From what I’ve heard through the grapevine, they don’t come back requesting another interview if you turn down the first one.”
I thought about what he said, but the truth was, I couldn’t care less about being rejected now. My mind was set on being the director of security for the tour, and I was looking forward to the challenge. I wanted to be with Adam. I didn’t need my brain to be clouded with other things.
“Just take a minute to think about it,” he said, snapping me out of my thoughts. “No matter what happens, I’ve got your six, Phantom. Whatever you decide, you’ll have my full support. I don’t want to lose my friend, but I’ll understand if you ever need more of a challenge than EHM can provide right now.”
The corner of my mouth hitched up as I looked at him. “You’ll never lose me, GQ. I’ve got your six, too. We all do.”
He smiled, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes like when he smiled at Dominick. “I know,” he said raggedly. “I know.”
I looked down at the email on my phone again, then checked the time.
Attached to the email was a reservation, just as she said, for the six o’clock flight to Washington, and a hotel reservation.
Immediately, I started calculating the time it would take to get there and back, and what to do about the tour until I returned.
They couldn’t wait for me. The tour schedule was tight.
“Can you handle things if I don’t get back in time?”
He smiled. “Yeah, no problem. Go impress them, brother. You can decide what to do after the interview.”
I knew he was being supportive, and I also knew he was right about going for the interview. If something happened and Adam wanted to live in LA, how would I work here from there? I couldn’t. It was best to cover my bases, because if we broke up, I wouldn’t be able to stay here and see him every day.
“Thanks man. I’ll be in touch.”
I turned to pick up my laptop and phone, then started gathering my things.
“Don’t worry about this. I’ll get it together for you. Want me to tell Adam?”
“Nah. They’re in a closed rehearsal. I’ve got it. I’ll let you know what happens.”
I shook off the thoughts for later as I jogged out the door with my laptop. It was after three, and I had to be at the airport by five to get through security and board my flight.
I’d text Adam when I got to the airport. I had to believe he knew this was not a goodbye.
