“Have you ever considered that you hadn’t met me yet, Adam?”
My eyes tried to pool, so I closed them for a moment. My heart was pounding, and I wanted to crawl into his lap and never let him go. Why was he giving me all this hope? He’d reduced me to one-word answers.
“No.”
Michael smiled at me, then reached around my neck with his left hand. I was busy having an out-of-body experience as he pulled me closer to kiss my forehead. All of my resolve crumbled at the sweet gesture. He was killing me in the very best way.
“What’s your obstacle?” I whispered as he met my gaze. His hazel-green eyes were more like emeralds now.
“My head tells me my job is to protect you, while my heart tells me to hold on and never let you go. I take my duty to protect you as your bodyguard very seriously. I’m torn about crossing the line as a professional while at the same time knowing I’ve finally found someone I have feelings for.”
I smiled despite myself. Brick by brick, he was bringing down my walls with his sweet words and kind heart.
“Iamirresistible,” I snarked.
Damn, I was immature sometimes.
Thankfully, Michael just laughed. “That you are, Rockstar. And I really love that about you. Everything, really.”
I shrugged, trying not to mess this up. “What do you suggest we do?”
Michael took my other hand in his. “If we’re on the same page, then I think we should get to know one another. Take every day as it comes and don’t second guess it. Let this thing between us continue to grow. If you feel something, don’t hold back. We’re supposed to be dating, so let’s do it for real.”
My heart was back to pounding like the drum line of a marching band. “We let it happen without strings?”
He laughed. “No, but I’m okay with that for now if that calms your jets. I want to get to know the real you because I enjoy being around you. And I want to romance the fuck out of you, Rockstar. I’ve never really done that before, and you need to figure out for yourself that you can trust me with your heart. What do you say? Will you let me romance you?”
I sucked in a deep breath to calm my nerves, just as my stomach let out a loud growl. My digestive system took the words out of my mouth.
“I’m taking that as a yes,” he said, leaning in to kiss my cheek.
I nodded and laughed before turning to him. “Think we could order dinner before I starve to death?”
Michael laughed. The warmth in his tone wrapped around me like a blanket. He was a balm to my battered soul.
“Whatever you say, boyfriend,” he teased, getting up to retrieve his phone. “Gotta keep my Rockstar happy.”
I guess I didn’t need those daisies anymore. Looks like the last one was ‘try again’.
CHAPTER10
MICHAEL
It wasa relief to be on the same page with Adam. After our talk, the confusion between us temporarily slipped away. We decided to show minimal PDA, and he suggested we limit our desire for one another to things we could do in the car without getting arrested.
“You mean you only want to fool around in my Tahoe?” I was confused.
“No. I mean, we only do what we could do in a car. You’re the one that wanted to get to know each other.”
Was he nuts? I looked at him with a heated expression when I stopped at the light. “We can fuck in a car, Rockstar.”
Adam’s eyes lit up with lust before he quickly put the brakes on and fidgeted in his seat. “There will be no fucking in the car. What I meant was if we can’t do it in public without getting arrested, it’s off limits. And fucking in here would definitely get us arrested. Or on the front page of all the tabloids. I can see it now. We’re shopping in the Safeway and all the tabloids at the checkout have my ass plastered on them with the headline,Rockstar fucks Bodyguard.”
I laughed uncontrollably at his over the top assessment before pulling away from the stoplight. “You’re probably right.”
“I know I am. Unfortunately, I’m trying to do the right thing and keep you from feeling conflicted about your duty. By the way, when am I going to get to drive myself around? I’m not complaining, but it seems ridiculous for you to shuttle me around like a man-servant when I could just drive myself.”
“I thought you wanted a man-servant. And I know you think the notes are coming from your mother, but until the police can get to the bottom of it, I need you to let me do my job. As important as it appears for you to help me with my duty, it’s equally important for me to be able to keep you safe, Adam.”
